football display caseYou may think of your football display case as being the protector of your valuable team memorabilia, but don’t forget that it requires protective maintenance of its own. Regular cleaning will prevent any buildup of sticky residue or dust from collecting on the surface of your display case. Here are 4 easy tips for cleaning and protecting your case.
Football Display Cases: Avoid Ammonia or Alcohol Based Cleaners
Durable, long-lasting acrylic is the most common material most football display cases are made of, and harsh cleaning chemicals can damage acrylic cases. Using cleaners with ammonia or alcohol on a football display case can cause it to turn yellow, which most people attribute incorrectly to aging. Though the discoloration may take some time to show, once it does it is extremely difficult to reverse. Natural and organic cleaners should also be avoided as they will likely cause cloudiness in the acrylic. It’s best to use cleaning products specifically designed to clean acrylic, or just plain water.
Autographed Football Display Case: Clean Residue Carefully
The accumulation of sticky residue from stickers or labels is something you are bound to run into when cleaning your display case. Using the wrong cleaning technique can result in smears and streaks that can be even more difficult to remedy. Avoid using a sharp-edged object such as a razor blade to remove adhesive residue, since it will easily scratch the acrylic. Opt to remove it with your fingernail or a blunt object, like a pencil eraser. Be cautious of using solvents or adhesive removers as these can either damage the surface of the case or cause discoloration. As above, look for adhesive removers specifically designed for use with acrylic surfaces.
Choose Your Cloth Wisely
The wrong type of cloth can leave minute scratches, smears or streaks on your display case. Using rough sponges or pads made for scouring, the result will inevitably be scratches and scuffs. As these build up over time, it will cause the case to appear cloudy. Don’t be tempted by disposable cleaning wipes either, for the very reason that they may contain chemicals with ammonia or alcohol. Use a lint-free, soft cloth only when cleaning your case, and avoid cleaning with too much pressure.
