How To Avoid Workplace Distractions

Do you have a job? What do you do? Perhaps you are a teacher. You teach students skills that will be valuable to them as they live their lives. Maybe you are a secretary. You answer the phone, send emails, and help your office run smoothly. You might even be a blogger who blogs about subjects you are interested in. Whatever you do for work, you can do your best work if you are not distracted. There are many types of distractions, both external and internal, that can happen in the workplace.

External distractions include noises like the phone ringing and people talking. These types of distractions can be a problem if you work best with quiet. There are two ways to handle this situation if you are one of these people. One way is to ignore the noise and go on with your work. Another way is to wear earplugs. Learning to ignore noises is the best way to handle this situation, because that way you can still hear important noises, such as your boss calling your name or the fire alarm going off in your building. By hearing your boss, you will be able to do what you are asked to do, which may help you advance in the company. By hearing the fire alarm, you can stay alive.

Internal distractions include things like hunger, fatigue, and worry. These things can impair your concentration and get in the way as you try to do your job. Avoid being distracted by hunger by eating. Some workplaces have a cafeteria, where employees can buy their lunch. If your place of employment does not have a cafeteria, or if you simply want to save money, bring a lunch from home. By eating lunch, you can avoid the discomfort that often accompanies hunger.

Fatigue is another common internal distraction. It often happens when a person sits for a long time, reading material on a computer screen. The eyes and the rest of the body will feel tired. To fight the tired feeling, step away from you desk and take a quick walk. If you work in a large building with several floors, you can either walk several laps on the floor where you work or walk down to the bottom floor and then come back up to yours. If you want some fresh air, you might even consider leaving your building to walk outside. Walk over to the nearby coffee shop and buy a cup of coffee, for example. Just a few minutes out of the office could work wonders on your productivity. You can then take your coffee to the office with you and continue with your work.

Worry is the one distraction that often causes people problems, especially if they are chronic worriers. Some people worry about things that they have no control of, such as what might happen on December 21 of this year. Rather than worrying about something like this, however, it is perhaps best to focus on living a good life. Go to school. Work. Enjoy time with your family and friends. Do what you have always wanted to do.

Some worry is common, but excessive worrying may cause you to develop health problems that could shorten your life. There are also those worries that are easily relieved, of course, such as leaving the house one morning and then later worrying that you may have left the coffee maker or the stove turned on. To ease this type of worry, simply go home and check. Once you have seen that everything is alright, you can breathe a sigh of relief and go on with your day.

Today is a gift. Do not waste it by worrying. Live, and do what you love.
