Today I'd like to elaborate on more tips in my how to meditate for beginners series. In part one I highlighted breathing, posture, and the dreaded 'thought overload'. If you haven't read part one that's perfectly fine you'll learn enough here to get started today! And if you have read part one then that's great too!
The first how to meditate for beginners tip I'd like to cover is and in depth look into breathing. I'm sure that everyone knows what breathing is, at least I sure hope so :) I'm going to take a look into a different breathing technique reminiscent of the great Buddha himself. It goes like this: close the mouth and make sure your lips and teeth are touching, suck all of the moisture out of your mouth and rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Now take a deep inhale through the nose making sure to expand your diaphragm, and exhale through the nose while contacting the diaphragm. It's that simple! I bet you never thought how to meditate for beginners could be this easy!
It may take a little bit of getting used to, but believe me this technique has been around for thousands of years for a reason!
Next on the list of how to meditate for beginners is hand placement. This is an often overlooked step, but if used can be an extremely valuable part of your routine. I'm going to give a little synapsis of a technique used in Vipassana meditation (Buddhist meditation). It goes like this: place your right hand at your belly button, palm up, place the left hand on top of the right hand in the same fashion with your palm up, then touch both thumbs together at the tips, making an almost circle. Got it? Great!
Practice this daily and your peace of mind will increase by leaps and bounds!
The last how to meditate for beginners tip has to do with goal setting. Now meditation is unlike a lot of things you may encounter on a daily basis. Most things whether that be sports, work, school, all have to do with setting goals and achieving them. Meditation is different It's done merely for the sake of doing it. Your not going to achieve enlightenment within the very first week :)
Remember how to meditate for beginners shows you tips for your practice that over time will lead to grand transformations, but it should be done in and of itself. Remember there's no such thing as a 'bad' meditation practice as long as your taking time out of your day to sit down and meditate then that's perfect! That's all you need to be doing. Don't compare it to your last session when you didn't have as many thoughts going through your head, or when your posture was better last time.
How to meditate for beginners is all about doing meditation for the sake of doing it. Yes, it will decrease stress and anxiety, and give you a greater peace of mind. But those are just by products. It will help to have an underlying goal that propels you through your practice each and every day.
To wrap things up in how to meditate for beginners we covered a new breathing technique, hand placement and goals and goal setting. The techniques learned here in how to meditate for beginners can be applied directly to any routine or can be used as the foundation if just starting.
