Involving Beneficiaries In Charity Planning

Many businesses make use of focus groups, customer surveys and interaction on social media as part of their market research. This can help to identify areas where they are excelling and areas which may be weak, which can inform future business planning. A company often has to provide incentives such as free products, discount vouchers or payment in order to encourage the participation of customers or the general public and this may put charities and non-profit organisations off of this form of market research.

Having said this, as support for charitable organisations is usually emotionally driven, it is more likely that people will be willing to be consulted as a way of supporting a cause they believe in and are passionate about. This is particularly true of existing or previous service users who have a unique insight into the charity and can provide invaluable feedback.

Limited finances often mean that charities are faced with tough decisions on where best to allocate funds in order to provide the best support for their service users. If the board of trustees have never experienced what the service users have, what seems like the best option may be different from what actually makes a difference. In consulting with beneficiaries, either by inviting them to become board members, or through less formal methods, the charity has a unique opportunity to learn from those it is working hard to serve.

Many current or ex-service users are flattered to be asked for their opinions on which services or facilities should be the focus for future investment. A charity can also benefit from their ideas on ways to develop the service to improve the support it offers. Some suggestions may not be viable in current conditions, but may have elements that could be implemented. Other ideas may be simple, low cost and easy to put into place, but had not previously been considered in business planning meetings.

Consider whether your charity has embraced open consultancy with service users. Are they invited to AGMs and other formal meetings and if so, are there measures in place to encourage the views of all present at these events? If formal meetings are not the best place for engaging with people, are their opportunities to hold informal forums or discussion groups? Can social media be used to interact and invite opinions and feedback?

In addition to providing a unique insight, beneficiaries can also support your organisation in a number of other ways. As an example, they may be able to take on specific roles in the preparation for fundraising events; from sharing content on social media platforms to displaying boards or posters outside their homes.

They could be asked to share their experience, from before they were helped by your organisation, through to the progress they have made since. These real case studies are emotional and powerful in encouraging future donations and offers of support for your cause. Past services users can also provide a valuable source of inspiration for current service users. Having shared a similar experience, it is easier for individuals to feel that their situation is understood and that with support there can be positive outcomes.

Many service users will feel that your organisation has offered them the support they needed at a time when it may have felt that there was nowhere else to turn. They have accepted your help and have formed a bond. Many will feel empowered by having the opportunity to give something back that helps you to help others in their situation. They are driven by passion and gratitude, rather than financial incentives and can provide input that helps your charity to make decisions, focus on target areas for business planning and generate future income through donations. If you are not already actively engaging with service users, then you could be missing out on a valuable resource.

Based in Buckinghamshire, The Clare Foundation provides advice, training, facilities and a range of other charity services. Whether your organisation is looking for a small office space, support with engaging business support through corporate social responsibility programmes, or management courses specifically aimed at charities, The Clare Foundation can help.
