Soccer coaching drills can range from a simple pass drill to a three-man weave that will teach players to fill open areas, to breaking down the kicking motion and foot angles of a particular type of kick. You could spend weeks going through all the different drills for soccer. Finding soccer coaching drills that you feel would best help your team, and what you feel your team would benefit from is the key. Depending on your players age and ability should help you decide which drills to focus on. You also have to consider the time frame for teaching those drills. For this, I want to focus on a 2 hour practice.
Soccer Hop: The very first thing that I try to get all off my players to understand is the soccer hop. The soccer hop is a short hop to get you into the proper position to strike the ball. You plant foot should always be next to the ball (unless you want the ball in the air). Approach the ball take a hop just before you strike it. This will give you the control and power to complete you kick. We use this drill on passing as well on shooting drills.
Passing: the first of the soccer coaching drills I focus on is passing. Over the past five years I have had dozens of players come to my team that had no control over their passes and most of them had no idea how to receive a pass. The first thing we do is to break the pass down into a couple of categories. 1. power behind the pass, where is it going how hard to kick it, what part of the foot to use. All questions I have to ask to get the players to understand how the pass should be made. Too hard and we over shoot our mark, too soft and it doesn't get there. 2. A long distance pass should be kicked with the laces of your shoe or the inside sweet spot (the knuckle of big toe), a short pass should be passed with the inside of the foot or the outside of the foot. Again as we strike the ball we use the soccer hop. We also use this little hop when we receive the ball. There is nothing that drives me crazy more that a great pass that gets booted 15 feet from the receiver because their foot is too stiff.
Shooting: The next soccer coaching drills we work on is shooting. We practice the soccer hop on this over and over. The hop and the follow through is very important for a good shot. Landing the plant foot next to the ball, head down, forming a V with your striking leg and following your kick forward. Planting the foot(Plant foot) behind the ball will cause the ball to rise and usually over the goal. Plant in front of the ball gives no power and the ball with stay on the ground. Where you strike the ball is also something to consider. Hit the ball on the top, the ball stays down. Hit it on the bottom gives it lift. Right or left the ball goes to the side. Square in the middle(know as the sweet spot of the ball) will give you the most power.
Positions: Another of the soccer coaching drills that I go over almost every practice is position responsibility. Every player on my team knows every position. They may never play forward but they know the position. By going over all the positions, every player will know what their teammates are doing or should be doing.
So as you can see I only touched on a few of the soccer coaching drills that you can use in practice, and they will more than fill your time. Search for what works for you and what your team needs to work on the most. Try to perfect them and add more as your season progresses. Kick Some Grass!
