The Party Of Fiscal Responsibility & Atonement

Regardless of which party a person represents, or the values they adopt to attract public voters, first impressions are commonly held for a very long time regarding the past work of political parties. In recent years, the Labour party has become symbolic of financial recklessness, conjuring images of Gordon Brown selling off our gold reserves for peanuts.

Watch any number of Parliamentary debates or PMQ’s, and you’ll routinely hear conservatives accusing Labour of ruining our economy in the first place. Because Brown and Blair ultimately became so unpopular, this representation was further compounded, and when election season 2010 arrived, the Labour party lost its advantage in Westminster and conceded to the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition in power today.

5 years later, and the general election approaches; UKIP are no longer on the fringe of politics, cooperation between the coalition has waned, and the liberal democrats have suffered greatly from the broken promises made in their 2010 election campaign. So the political landscape is certainly not clear. The Labour party, under the leadership of Ed Miliband, is also suffering an image problem. Not only is Miliband viewed as potentially poor leadership material, but the Labour party has a reputation to rebuild following poor economic decisions in the past, as well as the war in Iraq which has currently cost the UK billions of pounds.

With just 23 days to go until the general election, the Labour party has unveiled its manifesto with a ‘budget responsibility lock’, meaning no extra spending or borrowing would be required to achieve its goals. Every pledge made inside is detailed with information on where the money would be coming from, all with the ultimate goal of eliminating the UK’s deficit. This also comes following a week in which Tony Blair, a largely marginalised figure in British politics, came out in support for Ed Miliband. However, the party appears to be distancing itself from Blair’s ‘New Labour’ movement, establishing itself once again as a party for the people.

The party is drawing focus to the differences in spending and cuts between itself and the Tories. Labour claims fiscal reasonability is best adhered to by making the richest in society pay more, as outlined with its non-dom tax changes and minimum wage rises, whilst Conservatives in government have saved money by cutting welfare spending.

Further highlighting its differences with the Tories, George Osborne last week pledged an extra £8 billion to the NHS, but was unable to explain where the money would come from during an interview. The NHS has long been a source of public controversy for Conservatives, many of whom favour privatisation.

Voters on either side of the fence will essentially be choosing a spending policy for the future of the UK’s economy and NHS. The spending plans already implemented by the Conservatives would only be in effect until 2016 if Labour was elected, and if not, they would be renewed and until at least 2020 by (presumably) the incumbent Tory government.

Whilst the Conservatives have long been viewed as the party to trust with the economy, many voters have been put off by vague financial pledges in its manifesto, as well as their intended sources for cuts to save money. Despite financial restraints, both parties believe they can deliver on the major reforms contained within their manifestos, with help from collaborative efforts between all parties present at Westminster, the long-term implementation of professional budgeting and forecasting software to assist economists and ultimately cut the UK’s deficit on a year-on-year basis.

With this strategy, Labour appears to be aligning itself with a popular consensus amongst voters that austerity is wrong. This message can be observed with widespread support across the EU, another political establishment that Labour has vowed to protect in the face of growing euro-scepticism and rising UKIP support. Whilst conservatives have folded on the issue of European Union membership, offering a referendum on the issue if elected, the Liberal Democrats and Labour party have stood firm in their belief that the EU will ultimately benefit the UK.

With its new manifesto, the Labour party is seeking economically sound answers to the current problems facing the UK, but it could also be accused of playing politics and deliberately putting forward pledges that will portray the Conservatives as the party of the rich. Both parties have put forward vastly different approaches to the future of UK spending, buts, and the NHS. It will be up to us to decide on May 7th.
