Why Some Seniors Continue Working After Retirement

People work all of their lives. Some work on factory assembly lines. Some work as teachers, patiently teaching classrooms of students. Others work in a host of other occupations, such as doctor, dentist, or secretary. They get up every morning, get dressed, fight the morning traffic, go to work, deal with their boss and coworkers, and put up with the daily uncertainties of a job. Yet when it comes time to retire, some people choose not to. Why?

One reason might be because of finances. They do not have enough money in their bank account and do not have enough Social Security to be able to retire. Without enough money, they will not be able to pay their bills, buy their groceries, get medical care, or do other things that are necessary in order to live. Since they do not have enough money, they must continue to work.

Another reason is purpose. They want a reason to get up in the morning. If they feel that they have no purpose, they may sleep the morning away, finally getting up at noon. They may also get depressed. They want to feel needed. Knowing that their supervisor needs them and values their contribution to the company helps them to feel good about themselves. If they feel good about themselves, they will be happier and healthier than if they do not. By being happy and healthy, they may live longer.

Third, working gives seniors something to do. They are also doing something that actually needs to be done, rather than simply busying themselves with something to make the time go by faster. By having somethng to occupy their time, they do not have time to engage in unhealthy behavior, such as eating out of boredom. Since they are working, they have to keep a schedule. They eat breakfast before going to work and dinner when they come home, rather than snacking all day long while watching television, like individuals who are bored might do.

A fourth reason that seniors might continue working after retirement is because they want to support themselves. They realize that their families have their own expenses, such as food, college tuition, and daycare. They do not want to be a burden. By earning a living, they can pay their bills and buy what they need.

There are many jobs available for seniors. They need only apply for them. If they are interested in a job, an employer may be interested in hiring them.
