With today's culture, is it is hard to figure out how to stop smoking, as there is much pressure at times and influence that can make you want to keep smoking. However, with the tips given here, it is possible to overcome your addiction and break out of the stress-smoke-stress-smoke cycle.

Treat smoking cessation like kicking any other addiction: as a series of days of sobriety. Breaking the habit is a process; it doesn't happen overnight. From time-to-time, also remind yourself that if you can get through today, getting through tomorrow will be that much easier.

Your doctor can help you quit smoking. There are medications, such as antidepressants, which will help to make quitting much easier. Your doctor will also put you in touch with support groups and other resources you can use.

Before setting a quit date or otherwise planning your quitting process, you must be committed to succeeding. A lot of smokers have a hard time quitting because they are not approaching the issue with the right mindset and do not have enough motivation. Keep your motivation for quitting in mind at all times.

Have people that you know you can trust to help you quit smoking. You need to let them know that you want their support, not their judgment. Make sure you tell them that you might be a bit cranky, especially during the first few days after your last cigarette. Quitting is hard, but if you have the support of your friends and family you'll be able to make it through a little easier.

Your doctor may be able to help you quit smoking if you can't do it by yourself. There may be prescription medication that can help making quitting easier, including some antidepressants. Aside from informing you of various smoking cessation medications, he or she can also let you know about support groups and other resources in the community that may be useful.

Do not make any exceptions to your new non-smoking rule. You may be thinking that you can handle having just one cigarette, but in reality, that one cigarette will probably undo all of your quitting efforts. Tell yourself the dangers that taking that one puff can do. This may stop you in your tracks and make it possible to fight off the craving.

The most important thing to do when you want to stop smoking is to make that initial commitment to the change. To begin your journey, you must simply stop smoking first. Quit and don't allow yourself to ever smoke again. Quitting outright might seem difficult at first. It has been shown that this method can be quite effective.

If you smoke at home, clean your place thoroughly, so it doesn't smell of smoke. Get your carpet and upholstery professionally cleaned, remove residue from the walls, and run your drapes and curtains through the wash. Doing so helps your home to stop smelling like cigarettes and stop it from being a constant reminder of the cigarettes you enjoyed.
