How To Make Your RV Your Home

If camping is your passion, you may considered what millions of others have the fantasy of leaving all your ties to urban life behind for a lifestyle freed from mortgage payments and land taxes by living full time in your RV. Your RV living experience does not have to remain a dream it can easily become your reality. Before it does though it helps tremendously if one is prepared for the culture shock of the lifestyle transition by knowing how to make your RV your home. I will list a few suggestions here that I feel are of primary importance for RV dwellers first setting out on their full time RV living adventure.

When moving from a 1000 sq. foot plus living accommodation into an eight foot wide by thirty foot long RV, roughly 240 sq feet, space becomes a precious commodity. Real estate is 25% or less than what most people are accustomed to. Where do we put everything? Through my own experience I have discovered a simple rule to answer that question. If you do not use the items daily, they get stored away. All RVs have storage compartments accessible either from the exterior or through doors under benches and beds within the interior. Some of these storage spaces have advantages over the others the most common being ease of access - This factor will determine the strategy for storing of the none daily use items.

Items that are used regularly throughout the week but not daily are stored in the most convenient to access storage compartments. If you have to get down on your hands and knees and crawl under the table, that is probably not a comfortable place to enter frequently. Reserve such cavities for the few things your require use of rarely. Be cautious though when storing these seldom used items in those difficult to access places for such items are the least inspected and often the most susceptible to such problems as moisture and insect damage.

When storing moisture and insect sensitive items in your RV try to avoid plastic bags. Such bags are easily punctured or torn and thus provide a false sense of security only to disappoint you later. I prefer the use of a more reliable container for storage- the plastic tote. These totes are inexpensive and available in all shapes and sizes and are secure against most elements when the tight fitting lid is properly fastened. Though the initial investment is greater than the cost of plastic bags the return will pay dividends by giving you comfort and piece of mind knowing that your valuable property is stored safely and securely.

People are all too often reluctant to realize their dreams for fear of the unknown. If you fantasize about escaping the ball and chain of urban life for the freedom of full time RV living, educate yourself about just what the transition requires and your fears will dissipate. Gather information on all questions you may have such as how to live in 25% or less of your accustomed living space and how to safely store your valuables. Once you have answers to many of your concerns your transition will be made much easier and your dream can become reality for you.
