Looking for your next adventure? Then you might want to attend a well renowned, annual event centered on the Peg Leg Smith Gold story. It happens in the quaint town of Borrego Springs, California. This little town nestled in the Anza Borrego State Park, the largest desert State Park in America.
Traveling East on S-22 from Borrego Springs, after going around the round about that is known as Christmas Circle leaving Borrego Springs. You will arrive at a monument that's placed there for the infamous Peg Leg Smith. On this very night, the first Saturday of April, right at dusk, it doesn't matter if it is hot, cold, windy or raining. Here you will find a large crowd of people gathered around a huge bon fire. These folks have traveled from all over the United States to celebrate the birthday of this crusty old miner. The way that they come and show their homage is by participating or just listening to a contest where the winner is the best liar and wins the biggest trophy. Boy oh boy, can they tell some huge whoppers here.
You see the story goes
Early in the 1800's, in the old, Wild West, days there lived an entrepreneur by the name of Peg Leg Smith. He spent much of his time traveling the desert, meeting with settlers and miners or just stealing their horses, depending on who is telling the story. One of those times while he was out selling his wares, he realized that he had lost his bearings. With no idea which way to head, there were some buttes close by that he figured, if he could just get to the top of the tallest one that he might be able to see his way. While on top of the butte, he noticed some strange rocks that were the shape of black balls. Shrugging his shoulders, grabbed some to take with him.
The entrepreneur made it safely home to San Francisco. Time had passed, Peg Leg needed something out of his forgotten saddle bags. Finding in the bags, the strange rocks. He decided to take them to the local assay office. The assayer told him that they were actually pure Gold....Whoopee! Peg Leg was now rich.
The Hunt Was On,
Now to find those Beautiful buttes that sat nicely, three in a row. This is where the real story begins, you see Peg Leg never found those buttes again, but that never stopped The old miner from being the best darn storyteller (liar) in the west. These stories are what made Peg leg a legend and many years later, stories (lies) are still being told
If you would like to join this annual event and try your luck at selling a whopper to the folks. You will need to follow some rules....(always gotta have them rules) First rule is your story needs to contain, a reference to Peg Leg and his gold. Second one, it should not run over five minutes long. This to make room for all the other liars, so they don't boo you right off the stage.
That is pretty much it. OH! One last thing. Don't confuse Peg Leg with Peg Leg Pete. That is another way to get the audience booing .This is a real BIG no-no. SO DONT SAY PEG LEG PETE!
So.... come one come all liars...
Love to see you there. Bring a chair, blankets and there have been times when it would have been nice to have an umbrella.
Come and bring your RV.
If you would like to stay the night, there's plenty of area to camp. Bring your RV or just set up your tent. There are no utilities. Just lot’s of open area. The surrounding area here is BLM land. Many full, time RVers and Snow birds come to winter. This area is also great for the families that bring their toys and play in the many miles of off, road trails for weekend only. Some of these folks join in on the festivities.
There really is so much more to tell about this area, I'll just save it for until next time we meet.
I will get back to you on the winner of the contest.
Bye for Now, or I will see you out there, I will be in my RV.
Kymee
He was a horse thief and and loved to tell, tall tales. Harry Oliver, an actor, took a liking to him and decided to start this great contest that has been going on for 90 years. If you are ever here at that time you better look me up. You can enter and knock their socks off with your story telling LOL.
Ahhh... the draw of a huge bon fire! Stories, a community and a memorial to Peg Leg Smith. Enjoy your RV adventure!
