Peg Leg Smiths Gold, Contest Winner!

At this lonely monument on Saturday April, 6th around noon the air was very still and it warmed up to 80 degrees.

From Tranquility

At noon while setting up the RV you would never guess that very night such a live annual event was going to take place. Yes there was the daily tourist that came to read the Peg Leg Smiths monument and maybe throw their rocks on the already massive form. Other than maybe a lizard all was very tranquil and undisturbed.

Around 3:00 the long time host starts to put things out in effort to have things ready. First the metal drums that lay on their side and holds the large bon fire with a pile of wood on the side. Two hours later, out comes the sound system. More people start to show up; milling around discussing how things will be set up. The truck then arrives with the trophies. The veterans (peglegophiles) now come and place their chairs in front for a better view. It is now 6:00 the PA system calls, "testing, testing". Just as if they were coming out of the wood work, people start to show up while the stereo is playing some very old country songs. What a difference to just hours ago. The announcement comes, "all who are here to tell a lie come put your name on the list". Still more people come. The sun is starting to set.

The Crowd of People are Ready for all to Start.

Now the Master of Ceremonies, "Welcome to the 38th annual Peg Leg Smith Liars Contest". She goes on to tell the history of the contest and about the story of the legendary liar Peg Leg Smith, which never found his gold.

Now this is where I found out a few things I did not know before. First of all this contest started in LA back in 1916 and after a few years the contest ended. Harry Oliver started it again in 1949 at the site where he erected a sign that read." Let those who seek Peg Leg's gold add ten rocks". Harry lived close by and led the contest until it ended again in 1959. Starting again in 1975, it has continued until now. The vote is still out on whether we should call this year's contest the 97th annual.

The first liar is introduced and the contest is off. What a perfect place to enjoy elaborate tales sitting in a lawn chair outside by a roaring fire. 8:30 the contest has come to an end. There were at least 12 adults and a hand full of children that were brave enough to tell a fib. The competition was stiff but the winner is picked and this year it was a girl in her 20s. She told some cock-n-bull story that really it was elixir that Peg Leg sold. She happened to have a bottle of the desert spirits with her for sale. The kids 3rd place winner was my 5 year old grandson. He did better then his grandma, which received nothing. The liars in our family are now on the 3rd generation. Now I need to find a place for the trophy and my grandsons head.

Undisturbed and Tranquil Once More,

Just as fast as everything was in place for the busy event at this memorial, All is Quiet and lonely once more.

One step out of the RV at 9:30 on Saturday night April 6th all that is left of this great tradition is the monument, the desert and the stars. Even the lizards are sleeping.

Until next year number 39 all is quiet, and the rock hill a little larger.

See you next year.

WOW! I never heard of this before, but I have heard Kymee of people sitting around barbecuing chicken, drinking beers and telling lies. You would think there are trophies involved as well. Thanks I learned a lot.

You are very welcome and thank you too! I think you are doing a great job at writing! It is difficult at first especially, but it gets easier the more you do it. Making an outline first seems to help me to organize what points I want to write about and also helps so I don't forget something I feel is important to my article. I know when I realized I had to start writing articles, I thought "oh, No way!" I can't do that! It won't be any good or people might not like it at all...people might think I'm weird, lol. I had a lot of excuses, but I realized I'm not getting anywhere thinking like that! I finally just said to myself that this is silly....you have to start somewhere...so I did, but I was scared stiff! In all the years that I used to go horseback riding (and I had some wild rides) I had never been so afraid as I was to write that first article, lol! Now, as you can see, I can't seem to stop until I write almost a book when I comment...sorry about that! God bless! Sherry
