The Best Ways to Camp

Camping is one of the best ways to vacation. It is something the whole family can do together, and enjoy. It can be as relaxing, or as educational as you like, and with the open roads before you, who knows what kind of adventure you can go on. One of the first things you should consider before even setting out, is what type of camping you will go on. Will you use a tent, will you rent a cabin on a camp site, or are you more serious about it and want to invest in a trailer, fifth wheel or an RV, which you can get from RV dealers NJ. This article will guide you through considering what type of camping you want to do, outlining advantages and disadvantages of each.

1. Tent Camping

This is the most basic and cheapest way to camp. A decent sized tent will set you back a few hundred dollars, and then there's the other equipment to consider, eg camping stoves, sleeping bags, pots & pans etc. You don't really need any specialized equipment, and it's a simple case of loading up your car or truck, and setting off to go wherever you want. Tent camping at sites is very cheap, and putting a tent up is a relatively simple affair.

Tent camping is great for the outdoors type who do not want the comforts of home. It puts you very close to nature, and is a fantastic way of introducing children to the outside world. Also, you can go for short breaks at a drop of a hat and very little planning is required. It's a great way to get started in the camping world.

2. Travel Trailers & Pop Ups

Travel trailers and pop ups are the next level in the camping world. Pop ups are simple boxes on wheels with canvas sides that form bedrooms. The center forms living and eating area, and most are not air conditioned. They are cheap and most cars should be able to tow them as they are not very heavy.

Travel trailer is the next step up with solid sides, longer units, and even slideouts creating even more room. They are much more sophisticated, and almost always come with air conditioning, heating, and hot water tanks. They vary in size ranging from 16' with a simple full bed, to two or three side units with queen or king beds and bunk houses. They also have sinks, ovens, tvs, and much, much more. Travel trailers are great, but you will need at the very minimum an SUV with towing capabilities of 3,000lbs. Diesels are the best pullers, capable of pulling trailers up to 14,000lbs. You will need proper towing equipment including brake controllers and sway bars. It's also advisable to take on comprehensive insurance, but this cost is normally well under $200 a year.

Of course, the main advantage with travel trailers is that once you have reached your destination, you can unhitch your car and this allows you to explore your surroundings easier. Your travel trailer will also be plugged into the campsites conveniences allowing you power and water supplied.

3. Fifth Wheels

Fifth wheels are often seen as the crossover between trailer and motorhome. They offer a great deal more space, especially those with slideouts. You have a great deal more headroom too, and they have all the conveniences of the travel trailer. Some also have space for a generator, making the entire unit self contained. This extra space and amenities do come at a price. Firstly, fifth wheels are more expensive than their travel trailer equivalent. They are also heavier. The third disadvantage is that you will need a decent sized truck to pull them, as well as having a hitch setup in the bed of the truck. Smaller trucks can pull the lighter fifth wheels, but a special sliding mechanism is required to push the hitch away from the cab of the truck. This is typically installed on beds of around 6'.

However, despite this extra cost, the space and extra convenience a fifth wheel does give is a big draw. Like a travel trailer, once you have arrived at your destination, you simply unhitch and are free to roam in your truck.

4. RV Camping

Motorhomes are the other option. The smaller motorhomes are the Class Cs and offer a compact environment, generally bed, dinette and overhead sleeping. The larger Class As offer more room, and other luxuries such as washer dryers and automatic leveling systems. Both Class A and Cs normally are self contained with generators on board.

The beauty of these units is that they offer comfort and space while driving. Passengers are not limited to sitting in one spot. They can use the amenities the units have to offer, such as watching tv for example, or laying on the bed. They are more expensive than travel trailers and fifth wheels, and are normally set up for 2-4 people.

The main disadvantage is that if you want to explore anywhere, you have to drive around in your motorhome, which can be very awkward and expensive; unless you installed a towing package to tow a car.

Each method of camping has its own merits. Tent camping is the cheapest but most uncomfortable, travel trailers offer affordable camping without having to upgrade your vehicle, fifth wheels have the most space, but you need a big truck, and motorhomes are perfect for long distance hauls and travels. What you need to do is to identify the type of camping you wish to do, understand your own requirements, and to measure them up against each method of camping. Whatever option you choose, you can be sure of exciting adventures ahead, especially if you choose RV dealers NJ to help you decide.
