The top 5 places to go hiking in wales

Wales is a beautiful country, but then I would say that as its where I was born. There are no shortage of great places to go hiking in wales and most of them were my childhood stomping grounds.

With so many options for hiking in wales it all depends on how difficult you want the day to be.

So starting with the easiest here is my top 5 places to go hiking in wales.

5. Tumbarlum

Located just outside of Risca view excellent views over the Severn estuary all the way down to Barry rock and upwards into Hereford. Tumbarlum is what is left of many believe to be a hill fort. The initial walk out of Risca is steep but it doesn't take too long to reach the top and once there you will see why a this would be a great place to keep an eye on the surrounding countryside.

4. The Sugarloaf

Only 2 miles outside of Abergavenny the Sugarloaf rises to 1,300 ft. The walk up to the summit is a gentle affair with gradual slopes that don't really give any difficultly til you are almost at the top. The summit is rocky with little vegetation and almost always populated by sheep ( that's Wales for you ). Worth the walk just for the views over the rest of the Black mountains.

3. Pen y Fan

A bit more of work involved with this mountain located just outside Breacon, Pen y Fan is over 2,000 ft high and with its pointed shape most of that is at the very end of the climb. The summit is a large flat area perfect for a spot of wild camping with just enough soil to pitch a small tent if needed.

2. Cambrian Mountains

The highest peak in the Cambrians is over 2,400 feet and is a good climb but the reason I like to visit is because of the large area to wander about in. Walking for hours sometimes without seeing another soul can be very relaxing and coupled with the beautiful landscape makes this a good place for a few days wild camping.

1. Snowdon

No 1 has to be the magnificent mount Snowdon soaring at over 3500ft above the stunning Snowdonia national park and called the busiest mountain in Britain, with visitor numbers boosted by the train service that runs up the mountain and the cafe on top. The sheer amount of people making their way up to the summit on a hot summers day is good to watch. If your going to attempt what is without a doubt the best hiking in wales its good to set aside a whole day for a return journey.

There are plenty of other places to go hiking in wales but these are my top choices.
