Cancer What Is It? – Article 1 Of 10

For reasons that I am about to disclose, I have decided to write a series of articles on cancer and in particular, about alternative cancer treatments. A friend of mine is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2000, underwent some conventional treatments and got through it. Then, in 2005 she was diagnosed terminal. This time, she refused the conventional treatments and sought out some alternative solutions to battling her cancer. She’s a bit of a fighter that way. It’s now 2012 and she’s going strong. She’s a very, very giving person and is helping others on their cancer journey. So I wrote these articles to help her help others, or so I thought.

A good friend of mine is pretty good as asking me questions when he thinks I need to know the answer. He asked me a question little while ago. “Why are you writing articles about cancer?” I responded almost immediately “because I like to write.” He got a little smile on his face and said “no, why are you really writing these articles?” he asked, “you don’t have cancer.” My friend is a bit of a life coach, among his many other skills. “ I dunno, I just like to write.” “I see” he said. After a moment he posed another question. “Who are you writing the articles for?” My response to this was immediate, “I’m writing it for [my friend] of course.”

“Uh huh, I see” said my friend, “what are your thoughts on cancer?” Again, a quick response “I know I don’t want to get it. It’s been over 35 years since I watched my grandfather die from pancreatic cancer. It wasn’t pleasant. My mom has had a couple of runs with it and has spent some time in treatment. And I’ve certainly know several people who didn’t survive long after the conventional treatments”. As I’ve come to expect from my friend, another question: “of course…so who are you really writing these articles for?” I’m on to his approach by now so this time, I got it. “I think I’m writing it for me too.” “That’s what I figured” he replied. “What are you going to do with these articles when they’re finished?” I hadn’t thought a whole lot about it other than give it to [my friend] and let her use it somehow.

She is very active in helping others to understand the cancer journey better. “How do you think you might be able to help her help others with your articles?” he probed a bit more. My friend, by nature and practice, is also a very giving person. He is very good at helping people understand how they can contribute to some greater good. It’s what he’s all about. After I thought about it some more, and had a bit of an a-ha moment, I responded “I can help others. I can help others who either have cancer, or have had it, or know someone who has it, or who don’t want to get it themselves.” His response was predictable: “that sounds about right.”

So with my new found focus, I started writing. I started writing so I could better understand her world. I started writing it to help others so they could make a more informed choice on the treatment(s) that are right for them. And I started writing it for me as a way to learn more about cancer prevention. What an eye opening experience this has been, let me tell you.

I will share with you some of my new knowledge in several articles to come. They will be about alternative cancer treatments that are based in natural, healthy practices. One of the most common themes throughout most of the literature I’ve read is that cancer can be beaten with a natural, healthy approach to diet & nutrition, and lifestyle. In fact, it looks to me like the one thing that medical practitioners on both sides of the cancer fighting fence will agree to is that diet, nutrition and lifestyle are key factors in combatting cancer.

I will never claim to be an expert. Rather, I am just someone who wants to share some knowledge with others so that they can be better informed when making their own decisions. But the one thing I will emphasize time and time again will be that you should do your own research. Find out what’s going on out there in the cancer fighting domain. Your doctors and oncologists don’t know everything, and many choose only to believe what they were taught in their medical schools. Nor do the alternative medical practitioners. But there’s a lot of diverse knowledge that forms the basis of alternative cancer treatments. So stay tuned…
