People debate over whether it is better to purchase genuine truck parts over alternative ones. Some people believe that purchasing genuine parts is better because they have been made directly by the manufacturer. However, others believe that alternative truck parts are just as good, and sometimes better, than their genuine counterparts. So is there really a difference between genuine and alternative truck parts or is it just a matter of opinion? Let’s take a look at the genuine and alternative parts in detail.
Genuine Parts
Genuine truck parts are usually up to par, however, there have been cases where trucks have broken down even after getting a brand new, genuine truck part. Genuine truck parts can come faulty and this can be seen in the case of recalls. If there are many recalls for a certain truck’s parts, the truck owner may think twice before using a genuine part.
Genuine truck parts usually have a 1-year standard manufacturer’s warranty on them meaning that if anything should go wrong, the manufacturer will either repair or replace the part, free of cost.
Alternative Parts
Alternative parts, also known as OEM parts are much less expensive than their genuine counterparts. These parts are not made by the manufacturer but rather by private truck part makers. These private truck part makers are able to offer the same truck part for a lower price because they do not add a large mark-up to the product cost.
Sometimes, the alternative part may be better than the genuine one in terms of performance and quality. However, this is not always the case. As the manufacturer does not endorse alternative truck parts, should anything go wrong in the truck because of an alternative part, the manufacturer or repair shop may refuse service. This will only cause more of a headache and cost more money.
Alternative parts do not have any warranty on them. If they should stop functioning the second you drive the truck out of the workshop, it is not the repair shops responsibility. You would need to purchase another alternative part.
Every state in the US has different rules and regulations about what type of truck part (genuine or alternative) can be used to repair a truck. In some states, the use of alternative truck parts by repair shops may be banned. This is because state regulations may restrict insurance companies from accepting claims on trucks and truck parts that are not directly endorsed by the manufacturer.
Purchasing an alternative truck part in a state where it is not going to be covered for repair will not only be a waste of money but also cause a lot of problems with insurance carriers in the long run.
Both alternative and genuine truck parts have their advantages and flaws. The decision whether it is better to use a genuine truck part over an alternative one comes down to cost and personal experience. If you are short on money and need the truck working again, then purchasing an alternative truck part may be your only option.
However, if you prefer using genuine parts, then you may do so if you have the money. Always remember to conduct some research into the type of part you are getting so that you make an informed decision as to whether a genuine or alternative, OEM truck parts should be purchased.
