Why The Epigenetics Approach On Cancer?

We are all derived from a set of instructions carried in the DNA inherited from the combination of our parents’ genetic material. However, the variation of gene expression in our phenotypes or “physical expressions” may not be solely due to alterations of our DNA sequence. The theory of epigenetics implies that environmental conditions encountered by an individual can leave an imprint not only in the individual affected but, may be passed on to the next generation and future generations.

The concept of imprinting refers to the ensuring of the epigenetic expression of a modification from a parental genome in the offspring. “What exactly does the term epigenetics mean?” some might ask. Considering that the prefix epi- means above and genetics refers to the genome, it may be inferred that modifications in patterns of gene expression lie above or close to the genome. Such modifications may influence what genes are expressed and which are not.

It is important to keep in mind the difference between abnormal modifications of the genome versus those in the epigenome. Abnormal modifications in the genome may include genetic changes due to mutations in DNA replication processes or perhaps rearrangements within the chromosomes. Examples of modifications in the epigenome may be recognized as changes attributed to DNA methylation, histone modifications, or RNA-mediated gene silencing amongst others. DNA methylation or “the addition of a methyl group” is considered to have regulatory consequences leading to human immunological malignancies such as cancer. It is important to keep in mind that such modifications do not occur only during the developmental stages of a fetus; they may occur over the course of a life-time.

As biomedical research advances, new therapies are tested, new approaches are considered, in respect to cancer research, the epigenetics theory now applied. Since epigenetic occurrences can explain the identity and ability for our cells to divide, they may explain how such characteristics are not regulated in cancer. The hopes for epigenetics in cancer research is that understanding how the effects of epigenetics on the immune system, that they may be reversed in a similar fashion. Perhaps hyper or over methylation of the promoters of cancer suppressor genes and other genes associated with cancer may lead to inactivation of the genes. Discoveries recently made in regards to cancer epigenetics tend to target the goal of obtaining cancer control. Gene transcription and the abnormal events that lead to cancer have become the main attraction of researchers, healthcare professionals, and general audiences alike.
