Are You A Skeptic?

The most unproductive people I know are also the most distrusting people. They refuse to trust anyone. They see only bad in employees, employers, vendors, and associates. Nothing is ever done right unless they do it themselves. They are convinced that relying on others will ensure failure. This attitude is guaranteed to bring failure. In order to be successful and productive, skepticism must be eliminated. You need to learn to trust others and value their abilities and skills. Eliminating skepticism requires commitment and a change of attitude.

Understand Your Weakness

You are not perfect! Did you catch that? Let me repeat it...you are not perfect! Remind yourself of this over and over again. Remind yourself that you are not the only person who can do your job. You are replaceable. The first step to eliminating skepticism is to understand your weaknesses. You have them and you know you have them. Be willing to admit them. Be willing to acknowledge that you have them. Stop trying to hide them by ignoring them and trying to work through them. Learn where your greatest weaknesses lie and learn what contributes to them.

Recognize the Skills of Others

Quit overlooking the clear skills and abilities of others. It is okay if an employee is able to do something better than you. Maximize that skill! A great leader is able to maximize the skills of his employees. Another excelling in an areas of your weakness does not negate your abilities or leadership. Rather, it heightens them. Develop in your ability to notice, acknowledge, and utilize the abilities of others.

Learn the Art of Delegation

Yes, I said "art." Delegation is really an art as opposed to anything else. You must develop and learn to delegate. Delegation isn't simply letting someone else do the job, nor is it forcing someone else to do a job you don't want to do. Delegation is understanding your weaknesses, recognizing the skills of others, and then carefully assigning tasks based on those assessments. Don't just delegate, excel in your delegating.

Trust Others

Delegating is pointless if you don't trust those to whom you delegated responsibility. If you are going to be more productive, eliminate skepticism, and delegate effectively, you must learn to trust others.

I hope you see how all of these work together. The only way you will successfully trust others is once you understand your weaknesses and recognize the skills of others. This will allow you to develop greater trust for those with sufficient skill. The more you delegate, the more you see the success of others and the easier it will be to trust. Eliminating skepticism is a process. For some it will take a while to develop, but don't give up. The rewards are great and the stakes are even greater.
