Skills Needed For Waitressing

I've been a waitress for a lot of years and most of the time it's a very enjoyable job, I am a people person so interacting with people for a living fits my personality perfectly I really couldn't imagine sitting at a computer screen all day not being able to chat with anyone for hours on end I would probably go insane!

I have learnt a lot of skills working in the food industry over the years and hopefully this article will demonstrate the skills needed for waitressing and how to make an excellent income by following some simple rules.

Waitressing starts with yourself

You have to have the right frame of mind, before every shift prepare yourself by doing the following:

1. Be on time for work, you will not keep this job unless you arrive on time every day

2. Always be presentable as possible, you need to be clean, uniform washed and ironed, hair and make up complete, smell good and don't over do it with the perfume.

Memory is crucial

You need to memorise the menu and drinks list in full, people expect you to know your stuff or they will become disillusioned with you and feel like you don't know what you are doing.

It's the same with a sales job because this is sales job (more on that in a minute) in sales you need to install confidence in the customer or the customer will never buy from you think about it if you had $5000 and wanted to buy a car would you give your hard earned money to someone that can't answer your basic questions about the car? NO and this apply's to waitressing you need to maximise every customers spend.

Build a good relationship with work colleagues

Why ?

1. You spend more time at work than anywhere else you need this to be a place you want to go not dread it every day.

2. They will make you job easier and help you when you find yourself in a bad situation e.g. Mr Drunk person keeps toughing you every time you pass his/her table, your snowed under with to much to do at busy periods.

3. If everyone works as a team you will all make more money and this is the main reason you are all at work!

How to make very good money as a waitress

Most people think waitresses don't earn very much money and I would guess 70% or maybe higher don't simply because their approach to the job is all wrong. You need to imagine every customer that is sitting down has the potential to give you a very good tip, not just a few dollars but $5, $10 or even more I average $12 from a table of two it's around $21 for tables of 3 and $25 for larger groups and I do this day in day out.

Follow these rules and you can easily do the same.

1. Be quick people don't like to wait

2. Offer drinks as soon as they are seated

3. Start to build rapport with friendly observations - people like to be around other people they can relate to and this also makes them relaxed.

4. Provide them with a menu and suggest two options you would recommend as an option.

5. Be attentive and quick at all times, what ever they need give it to then ASAP.

6. Compliment them on clothing, jewellery, hairstyle people normally make an effort when they go to a restaurant, what you are doing is reassuring them of their own choices.

7. Never stop moving, if you have time to stand around chatting to work colleagues you are not serving enough tables, handle as many tables as you can the more you are able to do the more tips you will acquire.

This is pretty much everything you need to know about skills needed for waitressing.

If you have any questions or comments you would like to ask or make please feel free and I would be more than happy to reply.
