Income Support Number - Should It Be Abolished?

Being once employed as a recruitment consultant in the United Kingdom, I have become very familiar with the UK benefits system over the years. The income support system has developed over time and you can now make claims online or even by simply calling the income support number. However, since I moved to Hong Kong, I have found my self wondering and questioning whether income support or financial benefits of any sort are a good for the economy. First let's look at what income support is and what you have to do to qualify in the UK.

What Is Income Support?

Income Support is a benefit available to residents in the United Kingdom who earn very little in the way of income. These people who claim income support are also possibly entitled to other benefits too such as housing benefit and Council Tax Benefit. Those who can successfully claim should be between 16-59 years old and only able to work less than 16 hours a week. There should be a legitimate reason for them not being able to work more hours but herein lies the problem!

The Income Support Number Loophole

These days it is very easy to pretend to be sick or feighn a disability. It is also easy for people to work more than 16 hours by doing cash in hand jobs. With these loopholes wide open for exploitation, people can simply call the income support number and claim income support when they don't really need it. The enfuriating thing for tax payers is that they pay to keep these people in food and clothing. So should the income support number be abolished? Should we be allowing this people to exploit the system?

No Income Support Number In Hong Kong

Since I moved to Hong Kong, I soon discovered that they have no benefits system system whatsoever. No income support number, no income support online, no job centres, no benefits agency, no nothing! To that end, if you don't work you don't earn. Simple as that. As a result, thay have a nation of incredibly hard working people who still work into their late seventies.

Everyone in Hong Kong is acountable for themselves. No one relies on hand outs from the government or from the hard working tax payer. As a result, the tax rate is at the ridculously low rate of 15% compared with that of the UK which is around 30%. I have just worked here for a year and paid no more than 200 quid in tax.Unbeleivable!

In the UK we seem to allow, even promote freeloaders to exploit a system that is supposed to be there to help those who genuinly need it. The income support number can be called anytime and money claimed but I think there needs to be either more stringent application rules and checks in place or we just scrap it all together and adopt Hong Kongs style of work ethics.

Thanks Kyle, I get where you are coming from but I guess it comes down to personal preference. Also, not quite sure I agree with you on the point you make about running water and power disappearing if you move just a few miles out of the city. I lived in Happy Valley (Palm A Dai) which is a few miles outside of Wan Chai and I never had any issues with electricity or running water. In fact, believe it or not, today in the Preston, Lancashire, UK, we have a power cut due to high winds. lol

Yeah, wind cuts of power anywhere that gets wind. I do agree that everywhere outside the "city" in China doesn't necessarily have no water or power, but there are instances of it. There are people there thriving in unbelievable ways, and there are the people that are supporting this by working long hours, for low wages...in poor conditions. I am frustrated by the lazy people as much as anyone here in Canada, there are some that can't work and there are many who are too lazy. It is determining how to separate the two that leaves these social programs running inefficiently.

Any system that is place that has a financial gain, will in some way be gamed. It is unfortunate that social programs are the target for the lazy and unwilling, but they do provide a valuable service to our 1st world countries. I do think that the Occupy movement is just adding to the fire, people are getting fed up with the individuals behaving like groupies and hippies, occupying space now with no other mission than to get in the way. I wouldn't use Hong Kong as a model for success though Craig, I was just there and trust me, UK is still a FAR more appealing place to live than Hong Kong. If you move a few miles out of the city, the running water and power disappears. Not the ideal situation or what you would want to base your country model off of.
