Why Are You Looking For Work?

There are many reasons people are looking for work today:

• First job

• Job satisfaction (or lack thereof)

• Feel like they’re in a rat race

• Not a good fit

• Got fired

There’s probably more but these are some of the more prevalent reasons. Regardless, you have your reasons and they are good ones. I’m a strong advocate for the phrase, “You've got to do what’s best for you and/or your family”. And sometimes that means that you need to change how you’re earning a dollar.

Added Education

Naturally, those directly out of post-secondary school will be looking for a job in the field they studied. You've put in the time and now you need to earn a dime (that’s after taxes). Of course, if you studied to be a lawyer or teacher that is what you will be looking for. But there are some careers that may require you to “start in the mail room”; meaning, you need to take an entry-level job before landing the one that you envisioned for yourself during those many late nights of studying at university.

For others, we've gone back to night school or taken career development courses at our current job and we now want to use those added qualifications to go after a promotion or a higher-ranked position with another company. This is a great way to keep working with an eye to improving ourselves at work.

Job Dissatisfaction

This, in my mind, is one of the main reasons people look for other work. Not being happy, not being respected, or even being bullied at work is probably what drives most people to look for other employment. Unfortunately, some feel forced to quit "on the spot" in reaction to something that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Whether there’s a series of incidents or one catastrophic incident, people will not remain in a job where they or others are not feeling valued.

Another reason for job dissatisfaction might be the “ho-hummness” of it all; the repetitiveness of doing the same thing, day in and day out, with no chance at improvements or excitement. There is no challenge in jobs like these and, unless you like this, most people want to feel challenged to some degree at work.

Increased Income

Yes, many of us leave our current job and go looking for another job because we want to make more money. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this because it shows a continued improvement that we all should be seeking. Just remember, just like in the Spiderman movie, “With increased power (read "money") comes increased responsibility”.

Increased income usually goes hand in hand with increased responsibility, whether that’s through a promotion or being successful at getting a job with another company. You will need to ensure that you have properly prepared yourself for this with career planning which must include the requisite education.

Additional Income

Sometimes we just need to get a second job to bring in that extra money for whatever reason. Or sometimes we need to work two jobs to bring in the income of one. This is a stark reality for some people even as they manage to raise kids, take care of their parents, or the myriad of other things that life requires of us.

Just remember that there is a reason for the maximum number of hours you can/should work as per legislation…you need your rest and time away from work as well. This is that work/life balance we hear so much of these days…and it’s true! You need time for you and your family or your hobbies so that you also learn to “stay sane”, whether you’re staying at the job you are in or you’re looking for other work.

Some folks have even turned to a work at home business to bring in some extra money and are actually being successful. Their online job is giving them the extras that they need, which means they can stay at home and take care of the kids or maybe catch that afternoon soap opera. And working from home gives that satisfaction not found on the factory floor...I call that "work/work" satisfaction.

Whatever your reason is for looking for work, I wish you success and satisfaction.
