It can happen to the best of us, our work becomes everything and our personal life suffers. This can have very negative consequences, and it is important to maintain a healthy personal life. Keep these 5 simple tips in mind and create an equitable work life balance.

1) Schedule “Me Time” Everyday

Whether its 10 minutes in a hot bath, or sitting on your patio sipping a glass of wine, a little “me time” can go a long way. It is important that you have the opportunity to recharge your batteries and take the down time you need to be rested and functioning at your best for the rest of the week.

Without taking those precious minutes to catch your breath, you run the risk of frustration, burn out, and bearishness! You deserve a moment to yourself, regardless of your schedule. When you are setting your tasks for the week, add in that yoga class or beer with the guys. Set an alert if you have to, just do it!

2) Use Your Vacation Days

Many of us are swamped at work and are not always able to take all of our vacation time each year. That is ok, but you should plan on taking time away from the office several times a year. Even if it is just a long weekend, your mental and physical health demands that you slow it down, put your feet up and give your brain a rest.

Plan the vacation well in advance so that you can schedule your project accordingly and allows you to get a colleague up to speed. This will minimize the stress and allow you to leave your desk behind without panic setting in.

3) Just Say No!

Whether it is a friend, family member or colleague, always meeting others’ needs can be a terribly draining and frustrating experience, especially if these favours are at the expense of your free time.

You can’t be everything to everyone every time and by saying no, you can focus your attention on other tasks more deserving of your time. If you are always the “yes” man, you are teaching people that they can call upon you whenever they need something and that you will likely meet that need.

Just think, would you rather be driving a colleague across town, or stretching out in a yoga class?

4) Turn Off Your Email!

Remember the good old days when you could only be reached if you were in a location with a working telephone? Or if you needed to transport information from one location to the next you faxed or used an envelope and stamp?

Regardless of how convenient the advent of technology has been in our day to day lives, our gadgets can keep us hooked into the office any time of the day or night. It is so important to know when to leave work behind and focus on yourself and your loved ones.

Choose a time to switch the phone off, or at least, turn off the email notifications. It’s so easy to get sucked back into work, even if you have been at home for hours. By committing to turn off the phone, you are committing to a healthy work-life balance.

I know this can be difficult, but if you set the boundary, others will soon learn that you are only available until a certain time and will endeavour to reach you during your working day.

5) Prioritize Your Loved Ones

This is certainly the most important tip to remember, as neglecting the ones you love can have a very negative long term effect on your life.

No job is worth the potential cost of disappointing or even losing those you care about. If you find yourself spending less and less time with your family, stop, and evaluate how you can avoid having your job consume you.

Comb through your schedule and eliminate frivolous appointments, if you are able, share the work load amongst your teammates, and limit the number of nights each week you are at a work related event. If you are conscious of how precious your time really is, it can be much easier to edit your calendar as necessary.

Just remember, schedule “me” time each and every day, use as much of your vacation time as possible, just say no, turn off the phone and put you and love ones first. Keep these work-life balance tips in mind and you are on your way to a happier you.
