Bringing New Cat Home

We have had dogs in the past. The most recent dog had passed away about two months prior to us looking at a cat to adopt back in 2007. One huge requirement from my husband was in order for us to get a cat; it had to be declawed. I wouldn't personally declaw a cat; however, I would own a declawed cat. We had already decided the cat was going to be an indoor only feline.

We kept going to the local PetSmart almost everyday looking at all the cats. My daughter and I saw the one we wanted. The cat we wanted was an American Short-Hair Tiger cat with a bob-tail. Everytime we went up to him, he would come to the door of his cage and rub his face and body over my daughter's hand and my hand. He was very playful and he was already front paw declawed. BINGO!

He was beautiful! His name was Sidney. All my daughter and I had to do was to get my husband to the store to look at the cat! I knew he would fall in love with Sidney as soon as he saw him. It seemed like a fews weeks passed before we could get my husband to the store but once he got there...it was over! He told me to go ahead and get him! My daughter and I went into super shopper mode to make sure we got all the cat stuff we needed to bring him home that day! Cat carrier, food bowl, cat food, water bowl, cat litter, litter box, litter scooper, toys, cat hair brush and a fluffy cat bed! We are all set!

The most important thing about bringing new cat home is showing the cat where the litter box is to make sure you house train the cat from the start! Immediately upon bringing Sidney home we kept him in his crate until I set-up the litter box. I placed the litter box in the hall bathroom. My daughter, I and Sidney went into the bathroom where the litter box was at and shut the door, opened his crate door and let him come out at his own pace. Once he came out of his crate, he would be walking back and forth between my daughter and myself. When he got a little more comfortable, I would put my hand in the litter and move it around to draw his attention to it. We stayed in that bathroom for 3 hours! I wasn't going to leave that bathroom until he used the litter box to make sure he knew where it was.

The next thing I did was open the bathroom door! Sidney bolted out of the bathroom and run up under the couch into the living room. When my husband came home a couple hours later, I told him where Sidney was at. He moved the couch away from where Sidney was at and Sidney growled and hissed! I thought Sidney was going to attack my husband! My husband put the couch back where it was. There under the couch Sidney stayed for over 24 hours. He finally came out from under the couch to eat and drink and then back under the couch he went. This went on for about 3 days.

I knew Sidney was starting to get more comfortable with his surroundings when he finally stopped hanging out under the couch and started hanging out on the floor. As time went on, he would lay around on the furniture and I knew he was viewing us as part of his family and permanent home.

As I did some research after we adopted Sidney, I found out that we should have kept Sidney in one room for 5 - 7 days before we let him have the run of the house! That way your new cat isn't so overwhelmed with his new environment and hide. I hope my experience with introducing new cat to household helps you out bringing your new cat home. Good luck!
