Not so many cat owners are aware about this but cats cannot actually taste sweet things. So if you are thinking about giving your cat a cold and sweet treats such as ice cream hoping they would love the taste, you might only get disappointed. Plus, it has been noted that ice cream is not good for cats.
For years, it has been known but not completely understood that domestic cats along with the other member of the feline species do not like nor appreciate sweet foods. Cats are picky eaters and unlike dogs that seemed to devour just about any food that you put before them, cats are not so attracted with sweets, even fruits.
Cats are only interested in one thing when it comes to food and that is meat. In fact, cats in the wild have strict meat diet. Some cats may eat vegetables and fruits but not all fruits and vegetables that you can safely eat are advised for cats to have.
Occasionally you might run across cats who like eating cake, ice cream, fruit and other sweet foods. But that does not mean your cat likes the sweet taste of these foods because in the first place, they cannot taste sweet foods. There are some reasons why cats may eat sweet things. The first one is the smell. When it smells good, cats are likely to indulge into it. The amino acid or salt content in some desserts may also be attracted to cats. Cats also enjoy the texture of sweet foods that is why you might think of them wanting to eat sweet foods.
There is no reason to give your cat ice cream because they do not taste the sweetness in this dessert like humans do because of their genetic composition. Because ice cream is sweet, your cats may suffer from the negative effects of excess sugar. It can be a significant risk to most cats because of the threat of diabetes. Overweight cats risk getting diabetes so you should avoid giving your cat anything that contains sugar.
Ice cream may also contain cheese and milk. Cats should only take milk coming from their mother. Cats are only capable of producing small amounts of enzymes needed to process lactose in milk. Therefore any regular milk is not all the time safe for your cats to take. If you want to give her milk though, make sure to limit the amount they should be taking. If allowed to drink milk in excessive amounts, it may potentially upset your cat’s digestion.
Cats also love cheese and most ice cream contains this ingredient. Some cat owners safely give their cat limited amounts of natural cheese as occasional treats. It is fine to give your cat ice cream that has cheese in it.
