Caring For A Pregnant Cat

Whether on purpose or by accident, if you think your female cat is pregnant then you are in for little bundles of adorable fluff in 59-65 days depending on the breed. So what do you need to do for your pregnant cat? And what should you expect her to be doing during the pregnancy?

Signs of pregnancy

There’s no such thing as a feline pregnancy test where the cat pees on a stick and a simple little displays tells you she is expecting. If you think she may be pregnant and need to know before the signs start to show, get in touch with your vet.

By the time, you can visually tell your cat is pregnant, she will be already 3-4 weeks into the process, at which point her nipples will become pinker and more prominent. At 4 weeks, the distinctive kitten bump will begin to show.

What happens during pregnancy

When your female cat is one to two weeks into her pregnancy, her appetite will start to increase. Studies have shown that females increase their calorie intact by at least 25% as they proceed through their pregnancy.

Yet oddly enough, at around three weeks she may lose her appetite. Don’t be unduly concerned by this as it tends to just be a dip and things will continue as before in a week. Make sure during this dip that you don’t adjust her diet or her food in any way.

Another dip in appetite is often seen in the last days of pregnancy and she will often become quite reclusive at this time. She won’t be around the family as much and will be seeking somewhere safe and dark to give birth. She will still be the same loving cat with her family but may be outwards hostile to strangers who present a threat to her in her condition.

Signs of a problem

A hormonal imbalance during pregnancy is something that can occur and is due to a hormone called progesterone. If this happens late in the pregnancy, it can start labour but the other extreme is that if it happens before the 6-week mark of the pregnancy, the kittens will be reabsorbed by the mother and the pregnancy ended.

Once this process starts, there is nothing can be done. Reabsorbing the kittens takes around 7-10 days and cannot be detected apart from the pregnancy not continuing as expected. If this happens to a cat, many breeders take her out of the breeding plan and have her spayed. If you are desperate to breed from her, she will likely need weekly hormone injections during the next pregnancy to complete it and your vet will be able to discuss this with you.

Other signs that the pregnancy or your cat could be in trouble include:

• Excessive loss of hair or a lacklustre coat

• After the third week she stops eating and loses weight

• Her temperature is high

• She excessive washes her genital area or there is a discharge

These can all be signs of the cat and her kittens being in danger and you need to speak to your vet immediately should any of these symptoms occur.

Conclusion

Cats don’t need any help to give birth and your female will find somewhere dark and quiet where she feels safe to delivery her litter. Just keep watch to make sure there are no problems and all being well you will soon have a whole new set of little kitties to get to know.
