Every cat lover should be familiar with the grumpy cat; the cat with the funny, grumpy look, and his Facebook page and YouTube which went viral. Today, we are not going to talk about him as he's already taken the feline lovers' world by storm. I would like to introduce 2 other cats with completely different appearances from any other normal cat.
Yoda - a cat with 4 ears
The movie "star wars" popularised the character of Yoda, the Jedi Master. At Chicago, there is a cat named after this movie character. Meet Yoda, the cat who was born with 2 extra ears. He has a total of 4 ears. Yoda was fostered by a bar owner, together with other kittens. Yoda was an 8-week-old kitten at that time and was passed around by curious drinkers in the bar. This was where a couple named Ted and Valerie fell in love with him. This couple had lost their pet cat of 20 years, so they decide to adopt Yoda and bring him to the vet for a checkup which revealed Yoda to be a perfectly healthy kitten.
Yoda is now a grown-up cat which its owners describe as perfectly affectionate, curious and a joy to be around. He is a brave cat and sociable too. His obsession is kind of different from other cats as he is passionately in love with bread. Valerie will not dare leave bread at the kitchen counter, even for a moment. He is also a very vocal cat, "meowing" his opinions frequently but softly. Yoda has found himself loving owners and an endless supply of bread, hopefully left unattended.
Frank and Louie - the 2-faced cat
A cat that is born with 2 faces is known as a Janus cat. Janus cats have very slim surviving rates, due to difficulties in both nursing and feeding them. They usually suffer from a slow starvation and aspirate milk into their lungs and die of pneumonia.
Meet Frank and Louie, the exotic blue-eyed ragdoll, a most unique feline with 2 faces, 2 noses, 2 mouths and 3 eyes. Each face has a different name. He actually made it into the Guinness book of world records for living to the ripe old age of 12 years. He was rescued by Marty Steven from being euthanized on the very day he was born. A Janus cat making it through 12 years is nothing short of a miraculous blessing as they usually only have a lifespan of 1 to 4 days.
The vet told Steven not to put his hopes on the Janus cat. But Steven never gave up. Steven had to use feeding tubes for 3 months but things turned out fine at the end. Frank and Louie survived against all odds. Even the vet said that his condition is very rare and for him to survive and live to adulthood is an unbelievable miracle.
Frank and Louie's faces were home to a collection of different parts; two noses which both worked perfectly well, one fully functional mouth with which to eat (while the other mouth did not have a lower jaw and was not connected to his digestive system), and 2 out of 3 eyes with which to take in this beautiful world (the middle one couldn't even blink).
Frank and Louie had a very friendly personality and was not at all bothered by their condition. Steven brought him out for regular car rides and walks with a leash. Passerbys were often curious and enjoyed patting him.
Hopefully, more Janus cats like Frank and Louie will get the chance to survive and live the full lives that they did. The real-life stories of Yoda, Frank and Louie and their adopters teach us not to judge anyone by their looks. And to give life a chance and hope for a better tomorrow.
That's awesome. I too have a 5 legged cat named Dosi. I love showing her off to people, lol. 6 toes, 3 legs, those are uncommon but not unheard of, 4 ears, 2 faces, 5 legs, not very many people have heard of those things.
Great article Cena! That's also how we all need to treat people too! Not to judge a book by its cover! The same goes for all animals too!
I enjoyed your article very much; many of the cockatiels I meet are special in some unique way. I really appreciate your website! Sherry M
