Deciphering Cat Food Labels A Tricky Process

So here you are, at the local pet store picking out a new brand of food for your cat. There are just so many choices. You are looking at the labels to see what one is the healthiest of the bunch, but you really have no idea what you are looking for. Well, you are not alone. There are thousands of cat owners out there that are just as lost.

You, and well as the thousands of others, are lost by design. Pet food companies want you to have no idea what you are looking for. This means dollars for them. They can use trickery and deceit to get you to buy their brand. You may think you are purchasing great stuff, but it can be loaded with cheap fillers and unhealthy nonsense, but hey, how will you know?

Did you know that the ingredient that is listed on the front of the can might not even be the main ingredient? For example, Cat Food with Chicken. It could be second or third even. And it’s completely legal, pet food companies are allowed to label it accordingly. There are a certain set of rules that pet food companies have to abide by: the 95% rule, 25% rule, and 3% rule. These rules have keywords that are associated with them. Once you learn the rules, these words will immediately tip you off on the type of food it really is.

Another thing companies like to do is use words like ‘premium’ to get you to buy their brand. What does premium cat food do? I don’t know, and neither does the AAFCO. The AAFCO is the body that governs pet food labeling, to explain it in a nutshell. So brands can use the word premium on their labels, and it doesn’t really mean a thing. Well, except that you will be paying more for it.

The different stages of life now have different cat foods. I’m talking about ‘kitten’ food, ‘adult’ food, ‘young adult’ food, and ‘senior’ food. There may be even more out there, who knows. It doesn’t matter though. There are only two that are of importance: kitten and adult. Anything else and you have to determine what course of action to take, if any.

If you are really serious about knowing what it is exactly you are feeding your cat, then this is just the beginning. Who knew cat food and nutrition was so intense huh? Deciphering cat food labels is an art that takes practice. Once you get the hang of it, then you are ready to move onto the ingredient label and analyze that.
