How Can I Prevent My Cat From Getting Cancer?

Finding out that you, a family member or your beloved kitty has cancer is a highly emotional and life changing event. Cancer is a well- known risk. But once you experience it personally, it can no longer be ignored.

I know this is true because I was diagnosed with lung cancer several years ago. And I dealt with it. But things were never the same. It was a kind of wake up call. When you have to face cancer up close, you realize something needs to change in your life.

If treatment has been successful the trick is to prevent recurrence. This becomes very important. But it’s far better to have this realization before you or a loved one gets cancer. In my personal search for prevention I found a lot in common between human and feline cancer prevention.

The best way to prevent cancer is to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress and increase antioxidants so as to rid the body of free radicals. Proper diet is vital. Many cat owners have been fooled into thinking that the commonly advertised cat foods are healthful.

Most of them contain grains, additives and meat by products. Cats were never designed to eat such foods. Their stomachs can't digest them. They are meat eaters. Because your cat isn't getting enough nutrition it will feel hungry.

These cats often overeat and become fat kitties. This increases their risk of developing diabetes and cancer. The best way to feed a cat is raw or canned organic meats, poultry or fish. Not all cats will eat raw. Good recipes for homemade cat food are available on line.

Some cats prefer dried foods. If so, an organic grain free brand is best. The more natural and the less processed the food, the better it is for your cat.

Cats need lots of pure water so that rules out tap water unless it’s filtered. This keeps them hydrated, detoxifies their bodies and strengthens immunity. Daily supplements and certain herbs and herbal preparations further boost immunity. Your cat becomes more energetic and playful.

Environmental toxins such as chemical cleaning products, flea powders and cigarette smoke are bad for cats. They should be avoided. Some vaccinations and antibiotics are carcinogenic. When possible, a natural approach is safer. Holistic veterinarians can help with this.

Stress is harmful, so strive to create a relaxing haven for both kitty and you. Cat trees, toys, a bed of its own and scratching posts show your cat you love him. Kitties delight in play time with you. If possible, make this a scheduled routine. Happy cats are also healthy cats.

Hi Judy, I'm so glad you enjoyed the article. I was originally going to write it about preventing cancer in cats and dogs, but I realized I've never had a dog of my own and am not familiar enough to fully answer the question. I did research it though and one fact I know for sure applies to dogs is the grains, additives and meat byproducts. So that part applies to both cats and dogs, The water as well and the stress free happy life too. Dogs apparently get cancer more often than cats, but are easier to treat as they show it sooner.
