How To Bond With Your Cat

We hear about dogs bonding with their owner all the time, going for walks, playing fetch, riding about on their owners' laps in cars but no one associates such activities with cats. Most people think cats are aloof and that no one bonds with their cat. This is far from the truth. Many owners are now going for walks with their cats. When starting from young, owners have found their cats get used to being on a leash and the more adventurous ones are keen to explore themselves. Who's leading who now.

All the time is grooming time for cats so a great way to bond with your cat is to help it with its grooming. I've met people who brush their cats down, and I've even heard of people whose cats love to have a lint remover rolled over them or even vacuumed.

Most cats love being stroked and petted. Sometimes an older cat may develop sensitive areas and not appreciate it as much as before, but cats love a tickle under the chin, on their forehead and definitely scratches behind the ears and head. This doesn't have to be a special time, you can develop a routine with your cat just before bed while you're reading or even while watching tv. Judge the cat by its purring. But remember, don't get carried away or your cat might smack you lightly to remind you it's more important than the tv show.

Food time is another time and way to bond with your cat. Cats have a general sense of food time. They're probably always punctual. So don't be late. Use meal time to reward your cat, use treats to reinforce positive behaviour. Once you find the type of food that your cat likes, ensure that it's the staple food and you can switch it up with some others once in while. Cats probably won't mind some belly rubs after that. But after eating time, remember that cats like to groom themselves to clean up and that's their private time. Take your cat out with you, let the cat socialise.

Always make sure there's some physical contact with your cat so it feels reassured. After the first few times, your cat will trust you and be more extroverted and enjoy going out. Just remember that loud sounds can startle a cat, so it is recommended that you have the cat secured within a carrier or on a leash if taking the cat out.

One possible long term approach to creating a good bond is to not punish bad behaviour. Just ignore it and only reward good behaviour. Never be physically violent to a cat or it will grow to resent you. There are various other ways to bond with your cat. It's important to remember to respect your cat's space and it will respect yours (except maybe the warm laptop that it wants to sit on all the time).

I love your article, my beautiful cat is curled up asleep next to me right now. Judging by the way she suddenly jerked, woke up and meowed a short while ago, then turned over and went back to sleep - I think she just had a nightmare! I love your site and well done for looking after Grandma and her babies. The world needs people like you.

I have four cats and three dogs (all rescues). One of the older ones had not been feeling at all well the last few days and did not want to eat. Two days ago, she walked into the woods and didn't return at meal time (the usual behavior). I knew she wasn't feeling well and feared the worst. I live in about 1,000 acres of woods and could not find her. This morning as I was preparing to hay the horses, I saw her laying under a trailer. She was covered in flies and again, I feared the worst but at least I could give her a proper burial. When I brushed the flies away, she opened her eyes and moaned a soft meow. I picked her up and took her into the house. She is really weak, but drank water immediately and ate some chicken broth. I moved her along with the water and broth into a cabinet. She likes that cabinet as it is cool and quiet and somewhat dark. She has been in there for the last six hours and moves about occasionally. She has a very quiet purr, and I am hoping she will recover. I rescued her when she was a kitten from the center line of a busy highway in a torrential rainstorm. She was terrified and was crouching as low to the pavement as possible to avoid the cars passing by at 65 miles per hour. Needless to say, she has personality. I am hoping for the best. Nice article.

Oh sorry to hear that. Hope she recover soon. Cat wander off could be looking for medication on their own. Maybe your cat is looking for also.

Unfortunately,. she didn't make it. The best part is I got to spend the last couple of days with her and gave her lots of attention. I was with her at the end. The rest of the pets are pretty upset, they are indeed smarter than we give them credit.
