How to Get Rid Of Fleas on Kittens

If you are seeing fleas on your kitten, it's very important for you to learn how to get rid of fleas on your kittens, safely.

Kittens can not use the same medications that older cats can use. There are ways to get rid of the fleas, safely and effectively on your kitten. You should be following the steps below immediately because the fleas can cause severe health risks to your kitten, including death in a matter of days!

Step 1: Fill a sink or tub with warm water. You want the water to be full enough so that your kittens entire body, except the head can be submerged completely in the water.

Your kittens natural reaction is going to be to hate the water and try to get out of it. Just set them in, butt first, slowly putting them in the water. If you talk gently to your kitten and stroke them with a wet hand you should be able to soothe them and take their fear of the water away.

Letting your kitten get use to the water when they're little, will make bathing them much easier when their full grown. It's just a matter of patience. When you're kitten is completely in the water and relaxed you can move on to step 2.

Step 2: You're going to use a flea shampoo, it needs to be specifically for kittens. There are brands that are safe for kittens and cats but don't use one that says for cats or dogs only. Read the fine print on the bottles and make sure it says, safe for kittens.

If your kittens skin is red and irritated from the fleas, or if your kitten is showing signs of fleas by chewing or scratching their skin, they're most likely allergic to the fleas saliva. You may want to consider a flea shampoo that has oatmeal in it. The oatmeal soothes the irritated skin, while the flea medication in the shampoo kills the fleas.

Step 3: Put a thick amount of the flea shampoo on your kittens coat. With a wet hand you are going to massage the shampoo right down to your kittens skin, making a very thick lather. Make sure that every part of your kittens body, including the tail, ears and neck, is covered in the lather.

Leave this lather on for about 5 minutes or so, continuing to massage it right into your kittens skin.

Step 4: Now you are going to rinse your kittens coat completely, don't leave any shampoo on the kittens skin, this could cause their skin to become irritated. Start at the neck, right behind the ears, rinsing all of the shampoo off of your kittens skin.

You may be seeing fleas coming out around your kittens face, take a wet hand and push the fleas back toward the water.

Step 5: After all the shampoo is off your kittens coat, you are going to keep them in the water for about 10 more minutes. You're going to see fleas trying to jump off your kitten, keep pushing them right back down in the water.

The fleas are going to be coming out all over your kittens face as well. Take a cup and continuously pour water over your kittens face. Talk gently to your kitten, trying to keep them from getting scared.

You are drowning the fleas. The longer you can keep your kitten in the warm water, the better the chance you have of removing the fleas completely.

Step 6: Take your kitten out of the water, wrapping them in a towel, rubbing them as dry as possible.

Step 7: You are going to use a flea comb, or any other fine tooth comb, and comb your kittens coat. Starting from behind the ears, make a full stroke to your kittens tail with the comb.

Rinse the comb in water after every stroke down your kittens coat. You need to continue combing your kitten like this until his/her entire coat has been combed.

This will remove any fleas and flea dirt from your kittens skin.

Step 8: Now you can use a flea powder for kittens. Follow the directions on the package and make sure that it specifically states, "safe for kittens", just like with the shampoo.

Step 9: You can put a flea collar on your kitten to protect them from the fleas, until they're old enough for a topical flea medication.

Your kitten is now flea free! To make a flea free environment for your kitten visit fleas b gone, here you'll find step by step instructions to make your home a flea free.
