How to Prepare Your Child for A Kitten

If your child asked you for a pet kitten, do not just look around for a kitten. It is important and necessary as a parent, you should prepare and monitor your child before getting one.

Kittens and cats are basically an independent animal. They know how to occupy and entertain themselves throughout the day. However, they do not know how to prepare a meal, clean themselves or their own waste. This is indeed a daily routine that you and your child have to do.

The very first step is to let your child know that a cat have a life span of up to at 15 years or more. They are not battery operated like any soft toys and does not have an on and off switch button.

Both your child and the cat have a lot to learn from each other and grow up as long term companions. Let your child read information on kittens and cats online or books to gain more knowledge on owning a pet.

Secondly, should your neighbor owns a cat, it will be a good help. You may approach your neighbor to allow your child to play with the cat and there after you can monitor your child closely on how he or she is treating the cat. If your child gets bored for just a couple of session, case closed. Your child might not be serious and you should not get a pet kitten for now.

Should there be a great connection between both your child and the cat, you should then allow your child to try to scoop the kitten waste on the litter box. As this will be a daily routine should you adopt a kitten. If your neighbor is comfortable with your child to accompany the cat, ask if your child can come often. You will need to explain to your neighbor that you are considering getting a pet kitten for your child. I believe your neighbor will be more than happy to guide you and your child to care for the cat.

If you could not find any of family members, neighbor or friends with a pet cat or kitten, you can approach or call up a local animal shelter or SPCA to enroll your child to be a volunteer. This way you can also be part of the volunteer service as well.

Volunteering in an animal shelter or SPCA will normally includes playing with cats or kittens, cleaning up the cages and feedings. These activities certainly benefits you and your child in a long run. Both of you might fall in love with a kitten or cat at the shelter where you have created a bond with the kitten or cat during volunteering. The kitten will be part of your family member and not just a companion for your child.

Lastly, when adopting a kitten or cat, there will be expenses. You will need to manage the amount of money you put aside for foods, kitty litters and medical expenses. Kittens will need regular vaccinations and check-up and aside to that, most importantly, you will need to prepare the kitten for neuter or spray when it reaches six months old.
