How To Stop A Cat From Spraying In The House

Have you ever had a problem with your cat spraying in the house?  Have you been totally frustrated and embarassed.  Are you ready to get rid of the cat?  Don't do it, you CAN stop a cat from spraying in the house.

First of all you need to take the cat to the vet to have him checked over.  Cats sometimes pee in the house, on the carpet, on the furniture, on your bed or your clothes because they are trying to tell you that they are sick.  A urinary tract problem is painful and could be deadly if not treated right away.  If it is not a medical problem, then the vet may have some suggestions to make this bad habit stop.  Often it is an emotional problem, the vet can help you with that too, prescribing medication to calm your cat while you try to find out what the problem is.

Cat may pee outside the litterbox because they are stressed.  It is hard to figure out why a cat is stressed but some of the reasons are:

- the litterbox is too dirty

- he doesn't like his litter box

- they have seen a stray cat wandering around outside

- a stray cat is spraying around the doorway or window

- a new cat or dog has moved into the household

- one of the family has moved in or out

- moving the furniture around

What You Can Do:

First of all, you must clean the pet urine.  There are some good products in pet stores and online.  If you can't get to the store or are waiting for your online shipment I have found that vinegar and water can help get rid of the stain and odor.  You must also clean the litter box every day.  Cats have a sense of smell that is much greater than ours and may refuse to use a litter box that is dirty.   You should also have at least one  litter box that for each cat in the house.   Sometimes cats refuse to use another cat's litter box.  I have also found that  pherome sprays work well.  They have a calming effect on most cats.

My Story:

I have raised Siamese cats in the past and have always wanted to have a Himalayan cat.  When my kids were a little older I had an opportunity to get a Himalayan kitten, a beautiful little puffball of fur.  But even after several siamese cats I was not prepared for a high strung Himalayan, when he began peeing on my couch.  I didn't know what to do, I didn't want to get rid of him and who would take in a cat that peed on the couch.  It was in the middle of winter, so I was couldn't leave him outside to freeze to death.  I was almost too embarassed to call the vet, and then when he was prescribed "happy pills" it seemed to solve the problem for a while.  Now I use Feliway or Pet Ease, pherome sprays which I find works even better than pills, and I try to keep the litter boxes clean.

These are some ways to stop a cat from spraying.  I hope this article has helped you. Visit my website to for more ways to   stop cat peeingindoors, and make peace with your cat and your family.
