How To Stop Your Cat Scratching Furniture

I've always been a cat lover, they make great pets and I think a cat makes a home. However the one thing I don't love is when they scratch furniture, I can be relaxing watching TV and the next thing I know I can hear the cat ripping the side of the sofa to bits.

Why Do Cats Scratch?

The first thing to understand is why cats scratch in the first place. Scratching is natural behavior for cats as you've probably gathered from the evidence around your home. First scratching keeps cats claws in good shape, they also like to scratch as a territorial mark so you often find claw marks around windowsills & doorways near where they sleep. Scratching also keeps your cat in shape, when they stretch it pulls and works muscles.

Prevention

One of the most popular ways to stop your cat scratching furniture is to buy or make a scratching post. Things to consider when you buy / make the post is to make sure it is the full length of the cat, tail included, as they like to stretch tall. Choose a post that has sisal textile material as this is a perfect texture and they can scratch until there hearts content. Do not choose / make a post with carpet material otherwise they will not be able to tell the difference between the post or your carpet. Make sure your post is secure, if it moves or topples over your cat will not go back to it.

Getting Cat To Use The Post

So you have got your cat the perfect post, you present it to your pampered friend, she takes one look at it, turns her nose up and walks off to destroy the sofa....frustrating? I'd say!! As mentioned before cats like to mark there territory so you need to put the post where they like to scratch the most i.e near the sofa or chair. They also like to scratch after they have eaten or have just woken up so put the post near those places. If you hide the post out of the way your cat will probably not be attracted to it. Spraying some catnip on the post will help to. If you catch your cat scratching furniture you can try squirting them with a water pistol or squirt bottle and saying a firm 'no', obviously this will not work when you're not around but this will get the cat used to using the post.

Be Patient

Be patient and never use physical punishment, at the end of the day scratching is only natural for cats. Never consider de-clawing a cat, this is a painful method and many veterinarians now refuse to do this.

Good luck!
