Cat? Facebook? Not words that you would usually string together in one sentence or phrase not so long ago, but nowadays it is a pretty much accepted that in the online world things have changed and changed in a big way.
This revolution in social interaction has resulted in one in ten pets in the UK having their own internet presence. Or is that really their owners hiding behind an alter ego so that they can present a side of themselves to the world that they would never show if it was their real self? I dare say that they would deny it but that is the way it seems to me.
A cat Facebook page then is not so illogical after all. You can tell the world all sorts of things that you would not even tell your nearest and dearest. After all it is not you that is talking it is the cat.
There are lots of other reasons for a cat Facebook page however. Not just the personal pages but all sorts of commercial ideas spring to mind. A front for cat foods, cat training courses, pet insurance etc. Facebook itself has a pet presence with Beast (Mark the founder's own dog) having its own page.
You tube star Maru the cat has had more than 6 million views on YouTube, Boo the dog has over 1.4 million likes on Facebook and Sockington the cat has over 1.5 million followers on Twitter.
Some people are not just there for the hell of it though. There is a considerable charity raising element out there. A New York cat called Romeo is responsible for raising over $50,000 over the years, which has been collected for animal welfare charities.
Is this all a complete mystery to you, why a cat Facebook page is even something that anyone in their right mind would ever consider? Do you think that Facebook itself (not to mention the strange creature that Twitters) is so beyond you that you wonder if the world is going mad? Well I can only say that if you do not try it you will never know. You are obviously pretty computer literate and internet savvy to have found this article that you are reading now, so what is stopping you setting your own social networking account up. Who knows, you might just set a cat Facebook page up for Tiddles too.
Now that is another story! Did you know that human names are more common for pets than the old fashioned Tiddles and Rover types. Time they definitely are a changing. (apologies to Bob Dylan)
LOL Kyle. Our cat now has 101 followers on Twitter and surprisingly one of those followers only follows a few but has thousands of followers themselves. (is that too many follows in one sentence?). The inspiration for this article was from the Daily Telegraph (biggest selling non tabloid in the UK). A cat has one of the biggest Facebook likes in the world! Have to admit that ours sometimes needs help with some of the spelling but she is keen to get on the keyboard on a regular basis. (you should see how many windows that opens at once!)
The cat website I run get 20-60 hits a day, have just set up an E-book and sign up with Aweber as auto responder. Working on follow up mails and affiliate products. Concentrating on this now as I have been dancing all over the place with too many sites.
Could be something about obsessive pet people. I do not use twitter as much as facebook but tweet all my posts and articles, with some social interaction to keep it more natural. I am supposedly being followed by Stephen Fry's cat. :-)
