Natural Medicine for Cats - which Essential Oils Are Safe?

Are you in search of natural remedies for your feline friends? If you worry about the side effects of prescriptions from the vet, then this article is for you. Natural medicine for cats will allow you to treat your princes and princesses for things like ticks without the toxins that are present in collars or sprays.

It seems the subject of which essential oils are safe for cats has been controversial lately. In doing research for this article, I found strong opinions on both sides of the argument. Some people say no essential oils should be used around cats, not even in a diffuser (aromatherapy). Some people say anything goes. Some people say “no melaleuca” (tea tree oil). Hopefully, we will be able to clear up some of the misconceptions about essential oils and cats in this discussion.

What I CAN say is that I have used a combination of bergamot and oregano on one of my cats for tapeworms with no ill effects. The oils were thoroughly diluted and rubbed on his feet twice a week for two weeks (so only four times total). You MUST be sure to thoroughly dilute the oils when you use them on the cat’s feet and DO NOT do it very often. Remember, this advice is not intended to contradict any treatment recommended by your vet.

Aromatherapy for Cats

Sorry, but I have to get into just a little bit of chemistry to explain this section, so bear with me. (I know, I wasn’tkitty good at it either!)

Hydrosols are the key to safe aromatherapy for cats. What are hydrosols? Good question-I hadn’t heard of them either. According to Holistic Aromatherpy for Animals, by Kristen Leigh Bell, hydrosols are “the water-based byproducts of the steam distillation of essential oils”.

What does this mean for your cat? It means that hydrosols are extraordinarily gentle substances, sort of like herbal tea. Their subtle fragrances make them tolerable and well accepted by cats.

Hydrosols or Drugs?

So, if you had a choice between taking a cat with allergies to the vet and receiving the standard treatment of a prednisone shot or pills, or using hydrosols and holistic supplements to manage those symptoms, which would you choose?

The natural route is not only safer, it’s smarter. Natural treatments will boost the cat’s immune system instead kitty2of tearing it down with the use of steroids that would suppress the immune system.

Hydrosols also partner well with other holistic remedies such as:

  • Flower Essences
  • Herbs
  • Massage
  • Reiki
  • Acupressure/Acupuncture

Just a little note about the quality of the essential oils you choose. A problem can usually be traced back to an oil that is synthetic or poor grade. Watch out for oils that are synthetically preserved or are not certified pure, therapeutic grade.

Which Essential Oils ARE Safe?

Here is a short list of oils that are safe for your little tiger:

  • Lemon
  • Melissa
  • Oregano
  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Geranium
  • Rose
  • Orange Blossom

Common Feline Ailments

Feline Tick Spray

2 oz. lavender, 1 oz. geranium, 1 oz. vodka, 4 oz. distilled water

Shake well and store in an opaque amber, green, or cobalt blue bottle. Your cat should be misted daily, either directly or by misting your hands and massaging into the cat’s fur.kitty3

“Calm Down Cat”-Spray

1 oz. lavender, 1 oz. rose,1 oz. orange blossom,1 oz. geranium, 1 oz. vodka, 4 oz. distilled water

Shake well for use. Spritz your environment or spray into your hands and massage your cat.

Shampoos for Cats

You don’t need to give kitty a bath very often, however, if you have a show cat that needs to be bathed, here is a good recipe for it:

4 oz. of all natural, unscented shampoo or liquid castille soap and 4 oz. of your favorite essential oil from the above list

Now, this shampoo will be watery but it won’t be any less effective. Most commercial shampoos are thick because salt has been added to it to make it that way. This can be drying.

To Sum Up

For any of you who still might be nervous about natural medicine for cats, and specifically essential oils, I would like to share this story with you. I’ll give the short version so if you want to read the whole thing, click here.

A cat has upper motor neuron damage to his bladder, so he can’t urinate. He was hospitalized over and over, but his owner was willing to do anything except put him to sleep.

His vet decided to try essential oils, so with his mom’s agreement they did. No bad news in the kitty’s bloodwork ever came back from using the oils, and now, though his bladder is still slightly enlarged, he can release urine more easily than before. This cat has now gone over a year without being hospitalized.

All in all, essential oils are a good alternative to visiting the vet. If you choose to use them, you will have the security of knowing that you are giving your furry child (or children) something made by nature and something that has no side effects. Natural medicine for cats will give you peace of mind and generally, a quick recovery from those minor illnesses and boo-boos.

Enjoy and Share!
