When you feel hot, your cat or dog feels hotter. We humans sweat when we feel hot. But a cat or dog does not sweat through his/her skin and body. They use panting or rapid breathing to cool themselves. And they lose a lot of energy doing that.
If the heat is too much for your cat or dog, this is very dangerous and may even be fatal. For Persian cats and dogs with short snouts, it is easier for them to suffer from heatstroke when compared to breeds with longer snouts.
When you notice your cat or dog breathing nosily, or having trouble swallowing and looking stressed, it could be suffering from heatstroke. This is an urgent sign that your cat or dog needs help real quick. Bring it to a cool place with shade. Get a cold wet towel, or better yet get cold packs and wrap them between their bellies and back legs. And rush him/her to a vet immediately.
During summer time, make sure your cat and dog drink lots of water. Some dogs like ice cubes to be added to their water bowls. Most dogs like to bathe and take occasional swims if the owners have a pool. As for cats, they don’t like water so much. But both cats and dogs do sweat a little through the pads on their feet.
Anyone with an iota of common sense would know not to leave their cat or dog in the car under the hot sun. Even for you, you will choose to switch on the air-con for comfort. If it’s really an unbearably hot day, just leave your cat and dog at home. If you want them to tag along, at least leave your air-con on while you attend to your own business. Every dog likes to have their daily walk or outdoor activities. The best time to walk is during the morning or evening. In the afternoon, the pavement is too hot for dogs to walk on. Their feet will easily get burnt. In the same way, you won’t want to be walking on a heated pathway without your shoes.
Try to have outdoor activities where there is more shade. Dark-coated animals absorb heat more readily, while white and lighter-coated animals are at a higher risk of getting skin cancer if they are exposed to the sun for long hours.
Brush your cat and dog regularly, especially those with long coats. This helps them feel comfortable and acts as protection against the heat. If your pets’ fur is matted, it is a good time to visit the groomer and get a clean shave. Once you’ve done that, keep them in the shade as their skin is now exposed and can be easily sunburned.
Play a part to keep your cat and dog safer and cooler. They are not only your furry best friends, but also your most lovable family members.
Hi Cena, Very good info! I really enjoyed reading your article. :) I don't like it at all when I see people leaving their dog (so far I haven't seen anyone leave their cat) in the car on hot days with only the windows a tiny crack open and of course no AC since the car is off. I know they wouldn't like to be left in the car like that, so why do they do that to their poor pets?
