What Is A Coupari?

The Coupari is a breed of domestic cat also known as the Longhair or Highland Fold and is essentially a longhaired version of the Scottish Fold Breed. It has the folded ears that give the breed its name and the same large eyes.

History

The breed takes its name from the location that the Scottish Fold was first discovered – Coupar Angus, a village 13 miles north-east of Perth in Scotland. Here in 1961, a white barn cat was discovered named Susie who had folded ears. She passed this trait to her kittens who were a mixture of longhaired and shorthaired. When the standard was written up, only the shorthaired cats were included as the Scottish Fold because the longhaired version was said to look too ‘earless’.

In the 1980s, an American breeder named Hazel Swadberg was the first person to exhibit longhaired Scottish Fold cats to help them gain recognition. Their name was taken from their original home village and by 1986, it was officially recognised by The International Cat Association (TICA), although as the Scottish Fold Longhair. By 1991, the Cat Fanciers Foundation gave the breed championship status as the Longhair Fold while the American Cat Fanciers Association accepted it as the Highland Fold. Therefore, even today there is no completely accepted name for these cats.

Appearance

These cats are of a medium size with very large, rounded eyes that are often said to be owl-like. The have full cheeks and short noses while the coat is soft to the touch, features just a single layer and comes in a range of colors and patterns.

Because they are longhaired, they need to be groomed but only around three times a week, depending on their coat. However, a daily grooming is ideal and will ensuring the coat doesn't become tangled, causing pain to de-tangle. A wide toothed comb is the best grooming instrument. Also checking their ears regularly to prevent a built-up of wax is important.

As with the Scottish Fold, the ears of these cats normally begin to fold at an age of around 21 days. If they remain straight, the cats are called Straights. Most cats have a single fold in their ears but some have been specifically bred to have two or even three folds that means the ears lie almost flat to the head. This fold is produced by an incomplete dominant gene that has an effect on the cartilage of the ears, making them fold forwards and downwards. Despite this, the ears can still move, swivel to listen and can even lie back somewhat when angry or prick up when curious.

Personality

Breeders describe these cats are very affectionate and docile in nature, loving to interact with humans and often becoming sad if left alone. They can be very vocal cats who like to grab people’s attention and will often rub against the leg as well. They are friendly with everyone but do tend to bond strongly with a single person. They live well with other pets, children, and are very intelligent, learning tricks or to walk on a leash.
