Our pets love us unconditionally and count on us to do the same for them. When we find a flea on our pets we usually panic because we know, most likely, if you are seeing one, many more are bound to follow! You may find yourself wondering, what is the best way to get rid of fleas? Depending on what your animals age is, and what type of animal you have, dog, puppy, cat or kitten, will determine what options are out there for you to get rid of the fleas.
If you have a puppy 8 weeks old or younger you can not use the same flea products that a puppy over 8 weeks old would use. A puppy can become very sick if you use a flea medication made for an older dog because of the toxic chemicals that are in them. There are other ways to remove fleas from puppies that are safe and non-toxic for them. If you see fleas on your puppy you should address the problem quickly because a flea infestation can cause severe health risks to your puppy very quickly! You should immediately wash your puppy in warm water using a puppy shampoo, keeping them submerged in the water, letting their head stay above the water, will cause the fleas to drown.
An adult dog is a little easier to treat for fleas. Along with flea topical medications and flea shampoos, getting rid of fleas on your dog is a little less stressful. You will need to take other precautions as well for your dog to make sure that their environment remains flea free. Addressing all the areas your dog likes to spend his/her time, their bed, carpet areas, etc., they will all need to be vacuumed thoroughly. You may need to use a flea fogger product as well to make sure that all 4 stages of the flea life cycle are killed.
Much like a puppy, a kitten that is infested with fleas can become very sick quickly if the fleas are not taken care of. A kitten is not able to tolerate an adult cats flea medication because of the toxicity of the adult flea medications. A kittens body is typically much smaller than a puppy, making fleas very deadly to the kitten. Your kitten may become lethargic and dehydrated very quickly from fleas. It is very important to address the problem quickly.
A cat may not even show signs of a flea problem until they are completely infested. Cat's usually don't bite and chew the way a dog will, making you aware of fleas. If your cat is biting and chewing and you find fleas on them it is a sure sign that your cat is allergic to the flea saliva, this is what causes them to itch and chew. If you're cat does have fleas don't waste time getting rid of them because of their size a flea infestation can be very deadly to a cat.
There are many ways to get rid of fleas on your pets, the trick is knowing what is the best thing for your particular pet based on their size and age. Finding the right information can be a very difficult process but not impossible. Wishing you the best getting rid of fleas on your pet!
