Another book series has entered the best-selling books list and there are more to come.
When a nine-year-old boy says, he has read eight books of the series ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid in four weeks it is a sign to check these books out.
Although I was aware of them and had quickly skimmed through a title, I hadn't found the time to read it.
An example quote from ‘The Last Straw: (Book 4 in the series) Greg Heffley, The Wimpy Kid, has an issue with his new year’s resolution. As far as he is concerned “I’m already pretty much one of the best people I know’. For the next year, he is going to help OTHER people improve. He is finding out that his best efforts are not appreciated.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a satirical realistic fiction novel by Jeff Kinney. It is the first book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. The book is about a boy named Greg Heffley and his struggles in middle school.
Kinney had no ambitions to be a children’s author but when his ambition to be a newspaper cartoonist founded he came up with something extremely successful. He used his cartoonist skills as well.
He came up with the idea of a Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ in 1998. It was originally conceived as an adult’s book. His kid was middle school weakling Greg Heffley. He worked on the book for nearly eight years before seeking a publisher.
The illustrations are hilarious and in cartoon format.
The book was put on ‘FunBrain, the Pearson Education website, in 2004 as an online version and was read 20 million times. Many requested a printed version.
The hardcover version of the book was released on April the 1st 2007. It was an abridged version of the online book. It received many awards and much praise and became a New York Times bestseller.
Greg the main character has a trouble-filled life at school, with family, and friends and in the neighbourhood. He is a walking nightmare. His problem-solving skills are non-existent and his creativity often backfires on him. He has a loyal friend Rowley Jefferson and an older brother Rodrick and in Greg’s eyes a spoiled younger brother Manny.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid has become a book franchise and it is one of the best-selling series of all time.
The first title won the British Blue Peter Award in 2012. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid Film has also been released.
The New York Times has described the books as perfectly pitched wit around a believably self-centred hero.
The School Library Journal suggests the series will be a big hit with reluctant readers. My nine-year-old student was such a child. I agree.
Kinney has produced eight novels, The Wimpy Kid Do-it-Yourself Book and The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary. They are published in 42 different languages and 75 million copies sold
Book number nine due for release. Sure beats trying to syndicate cartoons.
