Go The F*ck To Sleep! – A Success Of Viral Marketing
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

The current #1 bestselling book on Amazon is ‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’, a bedtime story for the frustrated and despairing parent when the little one just wants ‘one more bedtime story’. Again. ‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’ is a story for the real world where a cute story (with rhymes and kittens) doesn’t always mean a toddler is going to fall asleep so easily.

The book looks just like a traditional kids bed time book, with one major difference – every cutesy nursery rhyme trope is finished with obscenities. It’s definitely a book for adults only, despite the cover.

‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’ is from the inspired pen of American novelist Adam Mansbach, author of ‘The End of the Jews’ and ‘Angry Black White Boy’. The book was written after an exasperated and tired Mansbach posted on Facebook “Look out for my forthcoming children’s book, Go the F*ck to Sleep.” The post was received so enthusiastically by friends that he began writing it.

The author asked his friend and artist, Ricardo Cortes, to illustrate. Cortes has illustrated several books and is also an artist and journalist. He has been featured in many newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly. The artwork in this book is very sweet and the sort of thing we are used to seeing in children’s books. So it does come as a surprise when you first see the title, ‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’. It is the juxtaposition of the sweet, innocent rhymes and artwork with the adult language that makes the humour.

The current success of the book is largely due to unintended viral marketing. Several PDF copies of the book were sent out via email and have caused such a stir that the book’s release date has been brought forward by four months to 14th June and an extra 150,000 copies are planned. Social media has definitely played its part in popularising this book, for which publisher Akashic is grateful.

Although there has been some contention about the appropriateness of the book, in general reviews have been positive. ‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’ is a humorous and honest take on parents frustrations trying to get their toddler to fall asleep at night. The author and some positive reviewers are of the view that the book opens a commentary on parenting today – not wanting to be thought of as bad parents, we feel compelled to stay with the child and show endless patience even though under the surface we feel frustrated and exhausted.

'Go the F*ck to Sleep' is currently available for preorder. Hopefully the book will succeed in remaining popular until its release date in June.
