Kimura for Any Perfect Date Night

It's a funny thing: 1 day you look up and realize the world's been spinning available with out you. I imply, you knew it was taking place but, once you became a parent, you had been as well busy with late night feedings, lack of quality sleep, acquiring by way of the teething and potty instruction and preschool to notice. But one particular day, the fog of early parenting lifts. Your children are a lot more independent and they even appear forward to seeing their preferred babysitters after within a even though. You obtain time, sometimes, for date nights. Even so, you'll find days when the rigors of parenting make you wonder should you have any power left over to devote to a night out.

Some years ago I wrote regarding the day I knew I was officially old, when I believed I wanted to visit a concert in Austin to hear a hip, new band. Then I realized what I'd a great deal rather do is sit on my cozy couch, drink fantastic wine, and listen to that band in the privacy of my property. Last week, nonetheless, my wish to stand within a crowd to listen to, and belt out, Hall & Oates songs (the music of my youth!) outweighed the idea of sitting still in my residence or anywhere. Maybe I not quite old yet after all. Or maybe Hall & Oates are 1 of the handful of bands that can still get me out of the house (and into my dancing shoes!).

Before the concert, we dined at Kimura, an intimate ramen restaurant created by Chef Michael Sohocki. His recent post on The Rivard Report, in regards to the lack of life in downtown San Antonio contributing, heavily, to his decision to close his lunch service at his other restaurant, Restaurant Gwendolyn, made for lively (adult!) conversation with my husband over this fantastic meal. (If that topic interests you, you can also read Jeff Reininger's open letter rebuttal, Robert Rivard's commentary on the subject, and Sohocki's second post about why he still believes in San Antonio. Their series of posts provide a fascinating and important look at the future of downtown San Antonio, the commercial real estate market in the center of our city, and the passionate, small businesses working hard to stay alive down there support local, y'all!).

We started with the tekka don tuna two ways; fresh tuna sashimi, chopped and spicy on seasoned rice. The dish was fresh and refreshing. I go back for extra within a heartbeat and I might just keep the whole bowl to myself when I do.

Although the menu listed many interesting options (from nigiri and sashimi to sliced ribeye, chicken, and even broiled eel), we both had to try the house specialty: a steaming bowl of ramen (how often can you get real ramen in San Antonio?).

I had that night's special, Shoyu with shrimp. Three perfectly cooked jumbo shrimp floated on top with a soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, and green onion. The savory soup also contained slices of mushrooms (portobello maybe?) which have been meaty, yet tender, and, when full of their own wonderfully earthy flavor, still soaked up the flavorful broth.

Roger ordered the tonkotsu ramen which was basically the same as mine but instead of shrimp it had pork belly. He loved the flavor it gave the ramen but he's not a huge fan of the texture or fattiness of pork belly. We decided later that he should have added beef to his ramen for any protein boost since he skipped the pork belly. Other items you can add to your ramen include chicken, pork, shrimp, tofu, extra noodles or broth, boiled egg, and veggies.

Should you uncover yourself with an insatiable want for ramen but you can discover a babysitter, you may yet be able to satisfying your craving. On the evening we dined there, a couple sat across from us with a toddler within a high chair. Kimura is pretty small so while you won want to bring the whole soccer team, they do appear equipped to host a baby or a toddler or two.

We loved Kimura, both the fresh and tasty offerings and the authentic noodle shop atmosphere and hope to visit again soon. In case you haven't been there yet, you've got to go. Grab a bowl of ramen and don forger to order the tekka don!

Located in downtown San Antonio, on the corner of Pecan and N. St. Mary's, and just two blocks away from the Majestic Theatre, Kimura is open every day for lunch and dinner (exact hours are posted at the bottom of their site) and closed on Sundays.

How was the concert? Well, I left the Majestic Theatre that evening with a hoarse voice and creaky knees from two hours of dancing, proving that, like 67-year-old Darryl Hall, I've got a long way to go before Old.
