The Five Reasons That Makes Kanchipuram A Favorite Tourist Hotspot

Kanchipuram, is one of the most sacred cities in India and is widely known for its temples that ranges back to the medieval ages. It is one from the cities in India that has attracted thousands of visitors, especially Hindu pilgrims and tourists, throughout the year. Situated in the north-east coast of Tamil Nadu; adjoining to the Bay of Bengal, the city is one of the most active city in the state. The economy of the city largely derives Kanchipuram tourism and silk saari production (which actually involves almost 5000 families living in the city).

The age-old temples, traditions, and the beauty of the city themselves are pretty much sufficient to validate the importance of the city in Indian tourism domain. However, if someone is still having some doubts about the city, then following are the five reasons that will change the perception and help to finalize the decision.

The city has a rich history to tell. Kanchipuram was the capital of early Chola. The earliest references to the are found in the books of Patanjali, a Sanskrit grammarian, who lived between 2nd and 3rd century BCE. Later, the city grew in importance when Pallavas ruled the lands. They have a big contribution in shaping up the city. During their rule they fortified the city with moats, ramparts, roads, and artistic temples. It is at this time the city became the centre of Bhuddist and Hindu learning. As the time passed by the city saw several wars for the land. For example the fight between the Cholas and Pallavas and the fight between Pandaya and Cholas. However, the good thing that happened in this time period is that every ruler of the city actually gave their input in developing the city.

All though the city has a very variable climate, still the city is worths a visit; especially during the festivals. Being one of the spiritual centers of the nation, the festivals in the city are very significant. Almost all the festivals are celebrated with great zeal and pomp. The city looks and feels completely different during festivals. To name a few festivals observed in the city include Masi Mahotsavam, Brahmotsavam, Garuda Sevai, Mahashivratri, and Float festival etc.

The city is best place to buy souvenir, one of which include the world famous Kanchipuram Silk Sarees. Being the traditional centre of silk weaving industry, the sarees produced in the city are the unmatched in the whole world. The sarees are made up of twisted yarn - wrapped and wafted twice. It is advised to do your shopping in the streets of Sangusapet, because the shop here, charge comparatively less for the sarees.

Being one of the prime cities in the state, the city is well-connected to the neighbouring cities and states. This, as a result makes reaching the city easy an easy task. The city is about 72 km from Chennai. The Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport to the city. Besides that the city can also be reached by the road and rail routes. The city has its own station. Many of the travellers who have been to the city advise to take a road trip to the city, it is the most fun medium to reach the city. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Coorporation provides daily bus services to and from Chennai, Bangalore, Vellore, Turipathi, and other nearby locations.

Kanchipuram is the perfect mixture of various religions, traditions, and creeds. The majorly practiced religions in the city include: Hundism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The city houses multiple ancient temples of each religion, which are also the prime places to visit in Kanchipuram. Besides the temple, other attraction of the city includes – Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, Dutch Fort, Kanchi Kudhil, and Madhurapuri Ashram.

Additionally, there are few other reasons that make the city a hot-favorite of many tourists, and the one that is very important is the accommodations in the city. One can find mind-blowing top-rated hotels to the more economic hotels in Kanchipuram.
