The Historic Squares In Florence

Florence is a city popular in the world for its works of art and the beauty of the monuments. A big part of city's artistic heritage is possible to see just walking the streets and squares of the old town.

Florence is like an open air museum, representing one of the most important aspects of the beauty of this Italian city - beautiful squares.

The squares of Florence have plenty important artistic and architectural works, despite that the historic center is very small so relatively there is such a great number of things to see.

Among the many streets of the city there are some that deserve to be seen with particular attention, we list the most important ones that every day are the destination of the most popular and appreciated tours.

Cathedral Square

This square is located in the heart of ancient Florence. Piazza del Duomo is also considered the religious center of the city for the presence of the main cathedral of this Italian city.

The monuments, artistic and architectural works in the Piazza del Duomo have an artistic and historical value like no other. In few hundred meters are built the magnificent complex structures such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery, Giotto's bell tower and Brunelleschi's Dome.

These monuments are of such artistic and historical importance and alone a worth a visit to Florence. Brunelleschi's dome deserves mentioning for being one of the first domes created by man without the aid of any support.

The methods with which it was built the dome of Florence Cathedral are still the subject of study by experts from around the world.

Republic square

Republic Square is located a few hundred meters from the complex of the Cathedral of Florence, this square is the most visible example of that period known as "renaissance."

This square was given its present form at a time when Florence was named the capital of Italy. The noticeable monuments are the abundance column and the arch of triumph. It is significant to remember the presence of "Caffe Giubbe Rosse" (Red Shirts of Garibaldi), a café-restaurant where prominent artists and personalities of the city come over, meet, write and create in this venue.

Signoria Square

The Piazza della Signoria has been the political center of the city since the Middle Ages. Governments which have made Florence one of the most famous Italian cities in the world always were here.

When speaking about Piazza della Signoria first to mention necessarily is the Palazzo Vecchio. Building where the leaders gather until today, and who have contributed most to enrich this building surely were the Medici.

Signoria Square is famous for the presence of some of the most important statues of the city, Michelangelo's David. Currently in the square is the copy of the statue, while the original David statue is exhibited in the museum of the Accademia Gallery, so to be protected from the weather.

Other statues in Signoria square are the Cosimo I on horseback, the Fountain of Neptune, Hercules and Cacus, Judith and Holofernes.

In Piazza della Signoria is also the Loggia della Signoria, a building on a corner of the Square with wide arches open to the street. There currently are placed other important statues which contribute to increasing the great charm of this square.

Royal Square (Pitti Square)

In Italian Piazza Pitti is the square in front of the famous Pitti Palace, the building which was the residence of the Medici family during Renaissance.

This square is located on the other side of the Arno River and covers a slightly raised position having been made in the initial part of the Boboli hill.

Piazza Pitti stands out because of its great extension that acts as a forecourt to the great Pitti Palace, behind the palace there is one of the most beautiful monumental gardens of Italy.
