The Memorial Day Weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer season. The Elite Travelers has compiled a list of things to do in NYC for the Memorial Day Weekend. 1. Fleet Week 2011 will feature more than 3,000 visitors from the world's greatest military force who will dock on Staten Island.

Visiting members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard will be a part of the fun and activities slated for the 24th annual Fleet Week New York, which starts Wednesday and continues through June 1.

The event will bring four U.S. Navy ships to dock at the former Stapleton home port.

Making a return visit to New York this year will be a boat that takes its name from our local harbor. The USS New York will be making her first trip back to New York since being commissioned here on Nov. 7, 2009. The amphibious assault ship is built with 7 ½-tons of steel from the fallen World Trade Center and named in honor of the city and state that was home to the World Trade Center towers.

The action begins Wednesday with the Parade of Ships. The ships pass under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge at 8 a.m. and finish about 9:15 a.m. Passing Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, the vessels will exchange a gun salute. As they near Downtown Manhattan, sailors will honor those who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

The ships will then travel to the George Washington Bridge before turning around to dock at the home port. Islanders can get a good view of the ships from Von Breisen Park, Buono Beach and areas along Front Street in Stapleton.
