What to Do In Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the capitol of the United States between the years 1790 and 1800. Because of its location to the north of the coal mining industry, in the center of fertile plains of Quaker farming and at the confluence of the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers, Philadelphia offers many places worthy of a visit. What are the most popular things to do in Philadelphia, PA?

Popular Things to Do in Philadelphia with Kids

Visiting the historic district of Philadelphia PA may seem like a daylong museum visit, but since there are many things that children have learned about including the Liberty Bell, Independence and Congress Hall with the copy of the United States Constitution, most children are fascinated. The good part of a downtown Philadelphia visit is you get a good walk.

The Philadelphia Zoo is also a safe bet. The Franklin Institute offers many hands on exhibits about science. The University of Pennsylvania has a Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology worth a visit.

Alternatively, a walk along the Schuylkill River at Fairmont Park wanders past many of the boating clubs and their unique and historic architecture. The clubs are active and rowers are out on the river daily. The walk has nice gardens, the old waterworks building and chances to identify many birds.

Things to Do in Philadelphia PA for Active Seniors

The hilly green terrain in the Philadelphia Pennsylavania region makes it a prime reason to stop and try out any of the courses in the area. My list from Best Places to Golf provides a huge number of public golf and country clubs in which to play including Bella Vista Golf Course, Carroll Valley Golf Resort, Center Square Golf Club, Cobb’s Creek Golf Club, Downington Country Club, Limekiln Golf Course, and Paxon Hollow Country Club—there’s many more, too. I played Limekiln Golf Course and had a great time.

Museums are available in plenty—The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a great choice with works by Impressionist and modern artists.

Visit Nearby Gettysburg, PA For More Fun Things to Do in the Philadelphia Area

The battle of Gettysburg was one of the major battles during the Civil War which became a turning point where the North stopped the South from advancing. The area of the battle of Gettysburg is scenic farm country and varied terrain. Across the battlefront are statues showing the positions of the major army battalions and signs explaining what happened. At Gettysburg, many of the historic leaders and events brings the lessons of independence learned in Philadelphia alive. The Gettysburg museum is awesome.

We found Gettysburg to be an inexpensive place to stay while visiting the region.

Things to Do in Philadelphia PA for Birders at nearby Valley Forge

Valley Forge is a popular park in the Philadelphia PA area that offers a good hike, history lesson and a chance to identify the Eastern Bluebird and other songbirds. See where George Washington camped out and where he and his officers had their headquarters, see photograph.

More birding is offered at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum.
