What Kind Of Car Should I Choose

I am here to ask your advice about something. Ever since I received my learner's driver license and before that, I have been driving and enamored by cars. No, I am not one of those car junkies that knows everything there is to know about a car.

I do not have a collection of Car & Driver magazines, nor do I attend car shows on a regular basis. I am your average everyday car driver that simply likes driving. I get up in the morning, drive to work, drive home at night, to the grocery store, to church and on vacations. I like comfort in the vehicle and lots of gadgets if possible.

What I have a hard time with is deciding which one will be the next one. I have driven Mitsubishi cars, Chevrolets, Fords, Dodge, Toyota, Chrysler and others. It seems like it used to be an easy task deciding. You were either a Chevy man or a Ford man. In fact you could pretty easily figure out which manufacturers were having a hard time putting out a good quality car.

In those days, you could switch fairly easily to the other car maker if one was having issues. But those days seem to be disappearing. The choices are becoming much too difficult. While general quality and reliability have risen, there are just too many choices and many of those choices look pretty similar.

No one car seems to really stand out from another. It is as if they all went to the same design school and but for a different color or angle on the fender, many similarities exist. Even the engines are pretty standard across the board with like performances. There are gas guzzlers, some that claim to get great gas mileage and other that are way too expensive or flimsy to be driving just for 50 miles per gallon.

As an American, there is a tendency for me to want to purchase an American made, produced and put together in the U.S. kind of car. Even that can be difficult to do when many parts come from many different places in the world. I am not sure that you can get a totally produced (parts and all) in the U.S. car. But I am okay with that. It is just the large amount of choices that have me perplexed.

There are black ones, brown ones, blue ones, and white ones. There are colors that defy one's imagination. Do I get a sunroof, alloy wheels, the GPS or satellite radio. A 4 cylinder will get better gas mileage but it won't hop onto the freeway as boldly as a 6-cylinder. Should it be a sedan, a hatchback, a wagon or SUV? And why in the world does it cost nearly a year's wage (U.S. average in 2010 was just under $42,000) for a new car.

I guess that the flip of a coin may very well decide this one. Or better yet, maybe I will just keep driving the old one. I know what is wrong with it and what is right with it....plus it is paid for.

Now I moonlight selling shoes in a high end shoe store and I would say that once you've had good quality orthotic shoes on your feet there's no going back! I think the same would apply to cars. I'm all for bring on the posh and gadgets... if one can afford it. I hear you that "it's paid for" is a very relevant argument. We do spend A LOT of time in the car though. Particularly as a parent. I think the next frontier is a European car... costs nothing to test drive Joseph! What a fun day out that would be!

Joseph, there isn't a car out there that satisfies it all. I want a vehicle that will carry 7 people if needed, but can still haul dirt. I want something that is AWD but gets at least 30 mpg. And I want all the safety bells and whistles. The gadgets, I don't really care about. Just make sure I have two cupholders and two cigarette outlets. I've had cars with one of each of these and it was painful!

Howdy Joseph...well I couldn't do without a truck....:) As a retired GM worker I would off course recommend a GM product... Got my wife a new Malibu a few years back and it's a great little car. One nice feature to check is "auto start"..Gets it warmed up on the way to the car. Onstar is a nice feature especially with the hands free cellular option. Almost never out of range of a signal.. The 6 cylinder in it has great pep and pickup and decent gas mileage too..

Kevin, I had to chuckle. In Australia the benefit of auto start is to cool the car down before you have to get in!! ;-)
