Best Vacuums for Dust Allergies

There are few things that can aggravate the allergies as much as the particles that can gather in your carpet. They come from everywhere -- from the grass outside, from your pets, from dust on your furniture, from food particles in your kitchen. They gather in your house and they form an invisible cloud that kicks up every time you step on your carpet. It works its way into your nose, and it irritates the inner lining of your nasal passages. You sneeze and sneeze, but you just kick those particles back out into the cloud.

So off you go doing everything and anything you can think of. You change the air filters in your air conditioning system. You put carpet powders down to clean those rugs once and for all. You make sure to brush your chocolate Lab outside, because her shedding is surely the cause of your suffering. You make your kids (and your husband) take their shoes off at the front door, and you are sweeping up the hard floor surfaces twice a day. However, your allergies are still bothering you. What on earth are you going to do? After all, you can't change the air filters every month, and eventually you want to be able to breathe at night.

Take a look at your vacuum cleaner. There are some tips that you can use when it comes to carpet cleaning. Some of them are true no matter what kind of machine you are using, but others have to do with your equipment. It is important to know what the best vacuums for dust allergies have in common.

First of all, the best vacuums for dust allergies are bagless. That vacuum cleaner bag is a hotbed for allergens from the very first time you turn the cleaner on with the new bag inside. It traps and holds particles, which means that they're no longer on your rug. However, it also means that they're stuck in your cleaner. If you pick up dust in one room, turn the vacuum cleaner off, and then head to another part of the house, all of that stuff can run back out of the bag into your house. You might have picked up most of the allergens, but some of them are going to leak right back out, and you haven't solved your problem completely.

A bagless vacuum cleaner collects all of your dust and dirt in a tank. When you are done vacuuming an area, you need to take out that tank and empty it. Most of these tanks are easily portable, but it's still a hassle to carry it to the trash can -- or, even better, out to the trash barrel that the sanitation crews come and empty. That way the allergens are completely gone from your home.

Another characteristic of the best vacuums for dust allergies is that the belts are well maintained. The belts that turn the motor inside your vacuum cleaner are made of rubber. Even the best rubber cracks and frays over time, which means that it will stretch. When it stretches, it does not run as efficiently. It takes longer for the vacuum to clean each room. Each pass of the vacuum cleaner starts kicking up more dust, so you are really just keeping the problem in your house, rather than doing anything helpful for it.

This is why it is also important to keep your brush and bar clean. If you allow obstructions to build up there, the suction power of the vacuum goes down. Instead of pulling the dust into the collection tank, the vacuum cleaner is just propelling it up into the air. That's not the right answer for you or your allergies.

When it is time to shop for a new vacuum, look for a HEPA vacuum cleaner. "HEPA" has become the new norm for vacuum filtration and home air purifiers. Also, be sure to spend some time and read the reviews and consumer feedback for any vaccum you are considering.

In order to qualify as a HEPA filter, a product must take out a minimum of 99.97 percent from any particles that are a minimum of 0.3 microns large. This means that all of the pollen, mold, pet dander, and most of the smog and smoke particles in your home should come up with a HEPA-qualified product. Particles that are smaller than 10 microns can lodge in your lungs, hindering respiration. Of the seven million particles found in each breath you inhale, 99 percent of them are of this type and can lodge in your lungs.

Just two of these cleaners are the Dyson HEPA Upright and the HEPA Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Canister. The technology at work in both of these cleaners can get just about all of the harmful particles out of your carpet. Instead of sneezing your way around the house, you can now breathe smoothly. These cleaners are not cheap, but your health is worth saving up the money for one. Above all, be sure to compare and shop around before committing to a vacuum cleaner.
