Clean And Happy: With Chemicals Or Without Chemicals?

Cleaning is one of the most satisfying chores, which is good since it has to be done so often! Making your home clean and free of dust, grime, and especially germs is a huge task and a labor of love. Fortunately, there are thousands of cleaning products out there on the market designed to make the cleaning get done quickly and efficiently. I'm sure you all have your favorites that you use all the time...

But hey! Did you know that all the categories of cleaners have companies who are now providing us with exciting and positive ways to tackle the dirt using a new "old" way of cleaning? It's called all natural, organic, eco-friendly or environmentally friendly. They get the job done Without Chemicals.

Well that's nice, you say, but what's wrong with the cleaners I'm using now? Those chemicals are what make my toilets stain-free and sterilized, my dishes sparkle and my floors shine like the top of the Chrysler Building!

Most people think that the only way to achieve true squeaky-clean status on their kitchen floor, dishes, toilet, clothes, etc. is to go the With Chemicals route. Some people aren't even aware that there even is an alternative. Well, if you fall under one of these categories, read on and keep an open mind: you might just find yourself trying some of these natural cleaners because not only do they work as well if not better than their toxic counterparts, the reasoning behind cleaning without chemicals is extremely important.

Here's the simple but important WHY behind choosing the Without Chemicals route:

#1- Natural cleaners kill 99.9% of those stinkin' bacterias and other germs botanically (what germs specifically? : influenza A, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella enterica and E. coli). So you won't just wiping away the visible dirt with these flowery formulas: You'll actually be germ-busting just as effectively as you would if you were using the toxic chemicals.

#2- It is a well known general practice to keep cleaning products out of the reach of children, the precaution mainly being so that they won't drink the toxins. However, it is not only the ingestion that is harmful. Your family (including pets!) come into contact with chemical vapors and residue all the time from floors, carpets, countertops, dishes, high chair trays, appliances, clothes, towels and sheets. Your common house cleaning chemicals contain Carcinogens (cause cancer), Endocrine Disruptors (think infertility, premature puberty, miscarriage, prostate problems, other hormone and reproductive complications, ADHD, immune system disorders, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other certain cancers) and Neurotoxins (alter neurons in the brain, cause problems ranging widely from headaches to loss of intellect). Most cleaners that are not derived from natural sources have these toxins in them! Products that are all-natural, organic and eco-friendly DON'T have these toxins.

#3- Your skin is an organ, just like your heart, lungs and brain. What chemicals your skin absorbs by being your hands being saturated in cleaner soaks right on in to your body (who has time to always dig out the rubber gloves every time you go to sanitize something or clean up a spill?) Having traces of toxins from chemical cleaners roaming around in your blood stream probably won't affect you immediately, but over time the build up of a certain toxin may take its toll. Many of the chemical properties are bioaccumulative, meaning that the chemicals do not purge easily from the body and over time and even mild exposures can add up to dangerous toxic levels. By the way, children are way more at risk for having complications for the simple reasons that they are smaller, have weaker immune systems and are usually playing on the floor, where the strongest chemicals tend to be used. Pets have the same risk. And if you can't wrap your mind around long-term problems, think about the way your skin and eyes often burn or itch when you're cleaning. That's an immediate signal that your body doesn't like what your using. The purest organic cleaners use ingredients that come from things we eat and are actually good for your skin.

#4- Cleaning with natural products, you won't get a headache breathing the toxic fumes, or get the strong cleaner smell trapped in your nose cavities for hours after cleaning. Did you know you can actually permanently ruin your olfactory senses by breathing bleach fumes in a non-ventilated area? Wouldn't that be a bummer...

#5- And speaking of olfactory, natural cleaners smell like flowers, fruit or spices or have no scent at all, so after a good cleaning your house will have a lovely and refreshing aura. This beats hands-down the gagging artificial scents or being bowled over with Eau de janitor closet. (Note: There are a couple of natural cleaners smell kind of funky, so you may want to gather some recommendations of products from friends or read product reviews to make sure you'll be delighted with your eco-friendly or organic cleaner choices.)

#6- The last point made here today, but not AT ALL the least (it's a biggie actually) is as follows: By cleaning without chemicals, you are helping to heal the earth by not endorsing products that pollute the environment, poisoning the waters, the ground, the air and endanger every living thing (including us!) more and more every day. Companies that care enough to make organic or eco-friendly cleaners also care about the environment to not test on animals, use smart energy like wind or solar power, make recyclable packaging out of recycled material and give back to the community. So by buying from these companies, you are helping by supporting good habits that will improve the health of the earth and all who live here.

So, the next time you find yourself in the cleaning aisle at the store, remember the positive reasoning behind the natural cleaners and give them a whirl! You won't regret it!
