Cleaning Carpet Stains Can Be Easy

When you remove stains there are some things you have to take into consideration if you want to have a satisfying results. The first of them is to take care for the stain as soon as possible. That way it won't have time to settle and become permanent.

The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove the stain because the fabric will absorb moisture and colour. Some fibres are more resistant than others. For example, most of the synthetic fibres are resistant to moisture and can't be dyed easily. Natural fibres like cotton are easily dyed and shrink when exposed to moisture.

Before you attempt any cleaning technique or method, I recommend that you see what kind of fabric you're dealing with. That way you'll not only clean the stain faster and easier, but also prevent damage to the fibres. Another tip I can give you is to learn the PH of the fabric you're going to clean and choose the right detergent. There are four types of cleaning solutions: acidic, alkaline, neutral and degreaser each has unique qualities and removes different kinds of stains.

You can find all the information you need on Wikipedia and different blogs. I want to tell you about methods and cleaning solutions which really work and you can try them at home. I’m not some environmental freak, although I try to live as green as possible. I’m telling you this because most of the commercial cleaning products contain dangerous and potentially toxic ingredients which can harm not only the environment, but also you your health.

Look at the label!

I advise you to look carefully before you purchase a detergent and always look at the label on the back, if there is a sign saying 'trade secret' move to the next one. This is the legal way of hiding harmful chemicals used by all the manufacturers of cleaning products. There are plenty of organic and green detergents to choose from and if you don't like them you can make some on your own fast and easy, some of them work even better than those on the market.

Remove the moisture

You can always use the common household ingredients, they also are quite effective especially if we're talking about coloured liquid stains such as coffee, blood, tea, red wine, etc. I’ll start with these spots and the technique of removing them. So, the first thing you have to do is take a clean dry rag or kitchen paper and try to remove as much moisture as you can. Don't rub because you'll force the stain down and we don't want that because it will be harder to remove it. Instead, gently blot and make sure to change the rag or paper often so it is always dry, proceed until nothing transfers.

Deal with the stain

Now it is time for step two: removing the stain. There are several methods and you have to decide, which is more appropriate. For example, if you spill wine I recommend baking soda or/and salt treatment as step two. Generously sprinkle on the spot and leave it to absorb the moisture for an hour, then thoroughly vacuum the area and the stain is gone at least in most cases.

As for coffee stains I recommend hydrogen peroxide a 3% solution will do perfectly. I love working with hydrogen peroxide because it has powerful bleaching qualities, but without the damage bleach causes to fabric. Moreover, you don't have to rinse them because peroxide turn into water once exposed to light. Another method of cleaning stains is with a simple mixture of water and liquid dish-washing detergent.

You will have to be careful because if you add too much cleaning solution the rinsing can be quite hard and you risk over saturating the area, which is not good for the fabric and the padding if we're talking about carpets. There is also a solution of water and lemon juice or vinegar which is used for cleaning. People say not to worry about the smell because it will disappear once it dries, but I really can't do it. I simply can't risk permanently damaging my shirts, upholstery, rug or carpet.

I recommend that you go with some liquid cleaning solutions because I’m not sure if the dry ones will remove the stains, but feel free to try if you have a moisture sensitive fabric. If you have any trouble removing spots, either you're not sure what cleaning solution to use or you don't know what kind of material you're dealing with. In this case, use the help of professional cleaning service.
