Havering Professionals\' Tips To De - odourise Your Carpets

Do you know what the worst part about having your kitchen, dining and living rooms in one place? The odours. When there are walls separating these rooms, it's likely some odours, if not all of the ones that come from the kitchen won't be able to wander off into another room through an open door. Opening the windows, heck, proper ventilation always helps, though at times it's just not enough.

This is largely due to the fact odours have the knack to stick to certain surfaces and even worse - fabrics. Odours can easily seep through wallpapers and spread their smelly feet over your carpets and rugs. It's a nasty "sight" to say the least and you might even think that, a person in my position doesn't have options, except for constant ventilation. But even constant ventilation can't fight off the horror that is a sticky carpet odour. What can?

Let me be the one to tell you, air-fresheners will not work. The only thing they're good for is masking a certain odour for no more than 3 minutes, until they dissipate. But fret not, there is a simple answer to this overly-dramatised problem I've introduced - de-odourising. I discovered that it's way better to properly de-odourise your carpet, instead of washing it every single time I cook a meal or spraying it with an air-freshener. If you're looking to de-odourise you carpet, here's what you'll need:

  • White vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Soft cloths
  • Water
  • A spray bottle
  • A dustpan
  • A broom
  • A vacuum

The first step depends on the type of odour you're fighting - if the odour is only on the surface, you just need to sprinkle the carpet with baking soda. However, if the odour has seeped into the fibres, you'll have to use a broom to work the baking soda into the fibres, once you've sprinkled it over the surface of the carpet. Regardless of the type of the odour, you'll need to sprinkle an additional layer, as thin layers of baking soda aren't very effective. Once you've done this, allow the baking soda to sit for either 24 or 48 hours, depending which is more suitable for the current situation, though carpet cleaners RM12 Havering recommend you let the soda sit for 48 hours for the best results.

After the chosen time period has passed, remove the top layer of baking soda, by dusting it into the dustpan with the broom. Once you've removed the top layer, proceed to thoroughly vacuum the entire carpet, in order to remove the bottom layer as well. Afterwards, smell the carpet to see if the smell has been removed or not.

If the odour hasn't been lifted from the fibres, proceed to apply vinegar to the carpet. Again, the way you apply the solution depends on the type of odour you're fighting: if it's a surface odour - pour the vinegar into the spray bottle and spray the solution over the surface of the carpet. If the odour goes deeper, for instance if something has been spilled and the scent has managed to seep through the fibres, you'll need to soak a cloth with the vinegar, in order to rub it into the fibres.

Once you apply the vinegar, you'll need to wait about 20 minutes, in order for it to set properly on the carpet. After the vinegar has set, use a clean cloth to blot it off of the carpet, afterwards, lightly rinse the carpet with clean water and blot the moisture with another clean cloth, until the carpet is dry.

Allow the carpet to dry completely, even after you've blotted the moisture. Lastly, vacuum the carpet to restore it's proper texture.
