Home Organizing Tips: Clearing Out The Clutter

These home organizing tips will help you clear out the clutter building up around the house or crammed into drawers and closets so much you may be afraid to even open them. Bad news is that the process of re-organizing involves making things messier before the clean up and clear out process is completed. Good news is once it’s done you feel a sense of accomplishment and ever so much better.

If you’ve let certain areas around your home get out of control, the first thing you should do is pick one project to tackle. Don’t try to tackle them all at once. If you take things one at a time, the job of organizing your home will get done without overwhelming you. It could be a China closet, coat closet, dresser, kitchen cabinet, or your car trunk. Just pick one and dive in.

Dig In

The first thing to do is completely empty the space you chose to organize. If you’re tackling a whole room, say a bedroom, pull everything out from under the bed and clear it out. Or pick a dresser or closet to start with. As you will see, you need to take everything out to begin with. This is what I mean by making things messier before the project is done.

Sort it Out

As you pull things out, sort them into three piles: one for things to discard, one for items to donate, and a third for things you want to keep. You may not be able to decide which pile everything goes into at first. That’s okay. Simple make a fourth pile for them – let’s call this pile ‘undecided’.

Decision Time

Now that you have finished the sorting process, look through the “undecided” pile again and only keep what you really want or need. If it made it to that pile, chances are you don’t really need any of it but feel some kind of attachment to the item. It’s okay to keep things that have sentimental value whether they have intrinsic value or not. I usually draw the line here if the item is very worn out, broken, or too dirty to clean up well. From this pile, you may find more to discard or donate. Sort this pile into the other three piles.

Once you’re finished deciding what to keep, toss, or donate, bag up the things that you are going to discard and the ones you can donate to the local charity. Then take the discarded bags out to your trash immediately. Next, take the donations out to your car. You will drop them off at the nearest donation center on your next errand run. The last thing you want is a car full of old junk. Remember, you’re not shifting stuff from here to there, you’re clearing out the clutter.

Clean Out and Put Away

Now, back to the room. You only have two piles left. These piles could contain clothes if you cleaned out a closet or dresser, or toys if you tackled the toy box, or books from a bookshelf. Whatever they are, you need to put them back neatly. Before you do, clean the area you have cleared out. Use containers to hold small items housed in dressers and closets or on shelves and label the containers to easy locate the items inside.

You are now ready to put the items back in their proper place. If anything you are keeping belongs in another area of the house, separate it from the other items to put away elsewhere. Neatly arrange the items back into the closet, dresser, or on the shelf. You can do this by category. For example, with clothing, you can arrange the clothes by season, color, type (pants, shirts, dresses, etc.) or how often you wear them keeping those you wear often the most accessible.

You're Done! Yeah!

The whole process of organizing your home can take time, but if you stick with the first job until it’s done, you will gain the momentum you need to tackle the next one. If you only have time for one small project a week, you will feel less and less stress caused by clutter as you accomplish each task and the incentive to continue the trend will spur you on.

These home organizing tips are designed to help you control the messy areas of your house. The trick is not to let the clutter get out of hand in the future. Designate a place for everything and put things away where they belong after you use them. Your life will be a lot less complicated if you do.
